travel advice for 4 days outside of Munich

I'm headed to Munich for work in October. I'd like to come in early and spend 4 days in towns outside of Munich.

I'm looking at flying into Munich, then visiting Dachau, then onto Nuremberg. From there, Bamberg and ending up in Rothenberg.

My questions are:
does this itinerary make sense for 4 days?

what should the return trip look like? should we make a circle of it and go to Stuttgart on the way back to Munich?

where should we stay the nights?
and google maps says some of the roads are private or restricted on this route, but I can't seem to find out which ones or if there are alternative routes?

Any advice would be welcome! thanks, LC

We = 2?

After Dachau I'd take the regional train to Nuremberg for 4 nights there (€26 for two on a day pass called the "Regio-Ticket Munich-Nuremberg.")

You can then visit Bamberg and Rothenburg by train on day trips. Bamberg is 45 minutes or so by direct train, Rothenburg a little longer. Each trip can be done by train on a VGN day pass called the Tagesticket Plus (€19.10 for two; if your first day is a Saturday you can use the SAME ticket on Sunday to travel to the second city. If not, pay €19.10 for the second day trip.

Returning to Munich: No sense in making a big circle IMO. There's ample stuff to occupy your time in the 3 cities you have already chosen. Return as you came - €26.

So I figure your transport costs for two should be about €90 including the return to Munich. That's probably not much more than gas would cost if you were renting a car, and you have no concerns about closed roads, picking up and dropping the car, traffic jams, insurance coverage, parking fees, etc.

thanks so much! I've heard great things about Rothenberg -- is it worth staying there for a night? and recommendations on where to stay in Nuremberg?

Be careful with spelling. There are towns in Germany that end in -berg (mountain) or -burg (castle), and sometimes there are two towns with similar names, the only difference being the 'e' or 'u'. The towns you want are Bamberg and Nürnberg, but the other one is Rothenburg (ob der Tauber). You probably don't want to end up in one of the towns called "Rothenberg".

By the way, you don't have to go back to Munich in order to go to Nürnberg (but you will probably want to because there is nowhere to store your luggage either at Dachau Bhf or the Memorial). There are train connections from Dachau Bhf to Nürnberg, including a direct RB at 15:35.

I would spend a night in Rothenburg. 1, there is a lot to see there, 2, it's nice after all the tourist buses leave for the night, 3, some people like the Night Watchman Tour at night.

thank you for the berg/burg lesson! that's very helpful.

I guess I didn't catch that we could to Dachau, then BACK to Munich for the train to Nuremberg? can we drive any portion of the route? we enjoy driving ourselves if possible.
