We are then going to Berlin for 3 days
Is the best way to travel from Munich to Berlin, is it by train? And is it best to purchase the tickets before we leave the US? Thanks, Jan

Yes, if you're just going from city to city the train is hard to beat. Buying tickets in advance can save you a bit of money, buy them at www.bahn.de and avoid third party resellers.

What is "best" for you?
Most people use trains: https://int.bahn.de/en
Early reservation allow access to saver fares which have train binding conditions.
Car is best for flexible exploration in between. Some additional requirements.
Bus is mostly best price - even when booking close to travel.

I looked up your hotel and it is certainly not typical. Are you extremely fond of cars? I see that you will be taking public transport in Munich quite a bit to get to and from your hotel. Be sure you look into money saving options there.

We took the train between Berlin and Munich. It was about 4.5 hours and a very pleasant ride. I would recommend booking in advance before you leave the States.
