Transportation from Munich airport to Reutte, Austria

We’re landing in Munich August 27 and plan to take a rental car and drive directly to Reutte, Austria to stay one night (visit castles and Zugspitz) then drive back to Munich for 2 nights. Would it be better to take a train?

In general, it's not a good idea to take a car trip of this length after a night flight, especially if you are not familiar with the country's car traffic. Train connections from MUC to Reutte can be found at www.bahn.com. The route is (1) S-Bahn from MUC to the main station, (2) regional train to Füssen, (3) bus to Reutte. If you leave after 9am (no restrictions on weekends), you can travel MUC - Füssen with a Bayern-Ticket (€32 for two), the bus to Reutte is in addition.

(BTW, if there is no other reason for you to travel to Reutte than Rick Steve's inexplicable fondness of it, you can also stay in Füssen, which is imho more attractive).

I think Pfronten, Germany, just over the border, a few minutes by train from Reutte, is also more attractive and probably less expensive than Füssen.

There is another route to Reutte and the Zugspitze. Take a train from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen (the Zugspitzebahn station is right next to the Garmisch-Partenkirchen station), then connect to Reutte or Pfronten on the line called the Außerfernbahn. The Außerfernbahn goes from GaP to Kempten through the Austrian Tirol. Even though it goes through Austria, the Bayern-Ticket is accepted on it, so you can do the entire trip, to Reutte or Pfronten, with the B-T. And if you stay in Pfronten, with your accommodations you will get a pass for the bus to Füssen.

You should know your own limits of whether you'll feel alert enough to drive a car after a flight. We've done it and haven't run into issues. I think it would be easier to explore the area with a car, especially if you wind up finishing the castles early and want the flexibility to get around to other areas (as we did).
