transportation from airport in Munich

My husband and I will be traveling to Munich the end of August and looking for the easiest way to get to our hotel which is close to the Sendlinger Tor. We are both in our early 70s and I am much more active than my husband. Not sure we are able to easily navigate a train, given that we would be arriving from a long overnight flight When in London two years ago we had so much advise on this forum with the same question so looking forward to what people think we should do.

Could you clarify why using a train would pose a difficulty? Note that the S bahn and Ubahn stations and trains are mostly accessible. The usual recommendation is to take the S1 or 8 into the city. If you get off at Karlsplatz station, it should only be a 10 minute walk. Or use the MVV app or Google Maps for instructions on how to connect to the U bahn that will stop at Sendlinger Tor.

Of course you have the option of a taxi from the airport, but given the distances, and depending on time of day, it could cost over €75.

If you feel that getting to and from and/or on and off a train is more than you want to handle, then why not splurge on a taxi or uber. Elective travel is meant for enjoyment isn't it. If need be you'll surely find a way to balance the added cost by economising elsewhere.

I've flown into Munich (MUC) three times this century on an overnight flight from the US. I've always taken an S-Bahn into town. It's too easy to do it that way; a taxi would be unnecessary and way too expensive. I'm in a rush right now; I'll post soon with detailed instructions on how to do it. The last time I was there, I stayed at a hotel between Sendlinger Tor and the S-Bahn station at Karlstor.

If you just want to get to your hotel, and don't plan on going far from it that day (there are several restaurants near Sendlinger Tor), you'll need two adult one-way tickets for 14,30€ each. For a couple of euro more (30,50€) you can buy a Group Day-ticket which will allow you to use any other transport in Munich that day, if you want to go out exploring later.

Of course you have the option of a taxi from the airport, but given the distances, and depending on time of day, it could cost over €75.

In fact, prices for a taxi start at around €90, which is also the fixed price for a Welcomepickups transfer (or similar service) at the cheapest time of day. OTOH, getting to Sendlinger Torplatz by train is easy: 1. Take either the S1 or S8 (whichever is next) to Marienplatz. 2. Change there to the U6 and travel one stop in direction "Klinikum Großhadern" to "Sendlinger Tor".

Don't bother with the different types of tickets, just download the MVGo app (or the MVV app; both include a journey planner too) to your cellphone and register. Before starting your journey, enter the number of passengers and click on SWIPE IN. After arriving at Sendlinger Tor, click on SWIPE OUT. The system calculates the cheapest fare, and if you use any means of transport (S-Bahn / U-Bahn / tram / bus) again on the same day, it recalculates it and charges your credit card the cheapest daily rate.

There is the Lufthansa shuttle bus that drops you off at the center and from there you could take a taxi. I haven't paid for it myself bc I have the monthly DB ticket, but I think it's under 20 euros to take it

We like the bus ourselves... Walk out, get on using ground level luggage compartments. No stairs, escalators, elevators, luggage in aisle etc. But then we pick our hotel with a mind to bus drop off and explore from there. Although by now Munich is more of a stopoff for us than a destination.
If hotel is fixed if money is more important than ease and convenience go with the train

We flew into Munich last Summer for a Danube River cruise. We are in our late 70s and handled the S-Bahn into the Rail Station in Munich with no problems.
Catch a cab from the train station, it would be cheaper than from the airport.
