Transportation advice MUC to Oberammergau to Salzburg

Hello! We will arrive in Munich at 7:10 AM and are staying in Oberammergau. I am new to the DB system. What are our best bets for transportation via train or bus? Are there any passes that could e used or do we just get point to point? How far in advance can/should we buy the tickets for mid-August travel. Also, we will go from Oberammergau to Salzburg. I would appreciate your advice on that as well. Thanks!

Russ, the OP is going to Oberammergau, not Mittenwald.

To get to Ogau, take the Sbahn 1 or 8 to the Hauptbahnhof. Then the regional train ticket will require a change at Murnau. You can use a Bayern ticket for up to 5 people for travel after 9 am on weekdays or any time on weekends. No advance purchase needed.

From O'gau to Salzburg, train back to Munich Hauptbahnhof (reverse of the above, changing in Murnau. Then change again to the train to Salzburg. While Salzburg is in Austria, you can still use the Bayern ticket if taking a regional train.

My apologies for the confusion. Yes, of course, Oberammergau - I confused this journey with another person's journey which was taking him to Mittenwald and Innsbruck.

But my ticketing instructions for MUC > Oberammergau are exactly the same as outlined in my previous post - Get the Regioticket Werdenfels at the airport. It is possible to do this journey on the Bayern Ticket, as CJean outlined, but the Regioticket is the better choice...

2 persons?

The Regioticket W. is 41 Euros, no hours restrictions on weekdays
https://www.bahn.de/angebot/regio/bayern/regio-ticket-werdenfels

The Bayern Ticket is 44 Euros, with no travel prior to 9 am on weekdays, so you'd also be obliged to wait unnecessarily at the airport if it's Sat or Sun and you are ready to travel prior to 9 am.

Both the Regioticket and the Bayern Ticket become costlier as the number of travelers increases. If there are 5 of you...

71 Euros / 5 with the Regioticket... 74 Euros with the Bayern Ticket.

For Oberammergau > Munich > Salzburg: The Bayern Ticket is the only pass option that will cover the whole trip. Do be careful not to board any long-distance trains (RJ trains for example) which travel between Munich and Salzburg, as the Bayern Ticket won't cover those OR the 60-Euro-per-person fine you will be charged for riding those trains without a valid ticket.

How far in advance can/should we buy the tickets for mid-August
travel.

The Werdenfels-Ticket, like all regional passes, is always the same price. There is no cost advantage to buying it in advance, and, in fact, when from the time you buy it, you are committed to a specific day and it is non-refundable. Wait until you get to Munich and buy it at an automat.

That is true for all the regional tickets in Germany. There is no price advantage for advance purchase. The only time there is a price advantage for advance purchase is for Spar-Pries or Super-Spar-Preis tickets for Long distance trains, but these tickets are train specific and non-refundable. If you purchase one for a train just after your plane arrives, and your plane is late arriving, you risk losing the ticket.

So that's sorted, you need a Werdenfels Ticket from Airport to Oberammergau and a Bayern Ticket for the onward travel to Salzburg.

Now the "how to". Both of these offers are for regional trasnport only and are designed to compete with car travel. So the first pirce (the driver) is what has been said above but the "driver" can take up to 4 "passengers" at a much lower add on price. To do this you buy ONE ticket for the total number of people up to 5. Do not buy one ticket each!!!

They are sold from DB ticket machines, in the Munich area also from MVV machines. After getting through the flight arrival process and getting back "groundside" you need to go to the Terminal railway station - follow any of the mass of signs that show a train logo or DB or a green sign with a white S, or to Area/Bereich Z if they still call it that - from Terminal 2 you will come through a courtyard and back into the shopping area. The trains are on the lower level but do not go down without the ticket, look for machines with DB or MVV logos, the bulk at the terminal 1 end of this area. They all have an english option to select. On DB machines the screens should have a quick goto button marked "Regional Offers" / "Regionale Angebote" . From that select the ticket type, it will probably ask you to confirm that you want it for today - and then it asks how many people, this is where you change from 1 to however many in the group (if it's more than 5 you need to buy another ticket). So if you select 2 it adds the extra passnger fee to the base price and prints one ticket for two people. I assume there is still a section of boxes on the ticket where you write in the names of passengers. That took longer to type than it takes to buy the ticket with one finger tapping the screen 6 times!

From airport use line S8 to Pasing (much easier interchange) - then the onward train. These are all regional so you can't get on the wrong type.

For the journey to Salzburg buying the ticket is the same one finger tapping process, you have to change trains at Munich Hauptbahnhof. This is massive. You can only use the RE5 line which runs from the area of tracks 5-10, the trains are blue/silver/yellow and direct to Salzburg depart at around 5 minutes before each hour.

Do you need to get from Salzburg to the airport? This is slightly more complicated.....
