Transferring between Frankfurt HBF tief & Frankfurt Main HBF

Are these two separate train stations? I’m familiar with the two distinctly separate train stations at Frankfurt airport — one for long-distance trains and the other for regional. In Frankfurt itself, I am very unfamiliar.

If I have 11 minutes to connect between Frankfurt HBF tief & Frankfurt Main HBF, is that enough time? The DB app states it’s a 10 minute walk between the two so why would it recommend connecting trains with only one minute to spare? That is way too stressful for me. What am I missing?

I’m thinking about taking a day trip to Bamberg in late September on a weekday & will be staying near the Gateway Gardens S-Bahn station near Frankfurt airport. All trains the DB App recommends only allow 11 minutes to connect between those two Frankfurt stations. So I’m curious about these two stations and I need to know what to expect. Thank you!

HBH tief is the Sbahn station located below the HBH train station. If 11 minutes isn't enough, just take an earlier Sbahn.

So there aren’t 2 separate stations with a “footpath” linking the two as the DB app described but just 1 train station with the Sbahn platform(s) on a lower level which can I assume is connected by escalators to the upper level where the ICE trains are?

The levels have escalators between them. You can find maps of the HBH on google images

Thank you! The DB app makes it seem like there are two different stations connected via a footpath.

As others have said, simply take an earlier S-bahn. You only have to walk upstairs. The trains are really messed up lately due to various reasons and during the summer vacation (starting 24 July in Hessen) they will be even more delays as they work on tunnels and tracks.

Thank you. Do you think they will be working on tunnels and tracks in mid September? I ask because I’m thinking about doing a day trip to Bamberg. Since it’s about 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 hours each way, this may not be the year to do it if there is a lot of train work taking place.

The train work is done during school vacations. The will be back in school at the end of Aug.
Deutsche Bahn will have information about delays and construction.

Here is the RMV map of the Frankfurt Hbf (ground level and "tief" or deep). The S-Bahns come in on the lowest level. There are either stairs or escalators (I think I remember escalators) to the ground level, probably shown as a train symbol. If there are no escalators to the ground level (from which the regional and long distance trains leave), you can always go up escalators to the U-Bahn level and then escalators from there to the ground level.

Most of the S-Bahn stopping at Gateway Gardens go through the underground (tief) station at the Frankfurt Hbf, but if you figure out how to use the Gateway Gardens departure schedule, you can find some S-Bahn (S8 & S9) stopping at Gateway Gardens and going to the ground level at the Frankfurt Hbf (platforms 1-24).

Or, just go to the Bahn schedule website and put in Gateway Gardens to Frankfurt Hbf and it will show some S-Bahn going to Tief and others going to Frankfurt(Main) Hbf. The later trains come in on the ground level, same level as your train to Bamberg uses.

If you are willing to go over to the Regionalbhf at the airport, there are also regional train going through that station and going into the Hbf on the ground level (but those trains don't seem to stop at Gateway Gardens).

It is not that complicated, you do not need a schedule, you do not need to go to the airport.
There is a train stopping at Gateway Gardens at least every 15 min. and they all go to the Hauptbahnhof, most of them underground, all will be Regional or S-bahns. Get on, get off 3 stops later at the main station. Yes, of course there are escalators, stairs and elevators. 400,000 people per day travel through here.
