Transfer Time - Munich's Franz Josef Strauß Airport to Munich Train Station

Am I crazy to cut it this close?

My Lufthansa Flight for a July trip is scheduled to arrive at 1350 at the Munich Airport.
The last direct train from Munich to Bozen/Bolzano is scheduled to leave the downtown Munich train station at 1334.

I can take the Lufthansa Bus to the train station or get myself from terminal 2 to terminal 1 where I can board the train
I think both take 45 min and leave every 15min. I believe I can purchase all the tickets online prior to leaving Seattle.

Am I crazy to believe I can make the last train leaving Munich for Bozen/Bolzano at 1334 with all the possible delays that could occur?
from a late landing,
to just getting off the plane,
the time it takes to get to the train or bus after I land and
the time it takes to make my way to the train once I arrive at the station.

How much time should I allow to make this transfer?
Should I just book a room near the station and plan on taking the train the next day?

If the general consensus is that I stay overnight in Munich, what are the latest suggestions anyone has for inexpensive lodgings for overnight near the train station.

Thank you for your advice.

According to your post , the train from the Hauptbahnhof leaves for Bolzano fifteen minutes before your flight arrives . ??? Am I missing something , I didn't have a drink before dinner tonight .

If I may venture a guess , assuming you made a mistake on the timing - an hour to get off the plane and exit the airport , an hour to get to the station ( either bus or S bahn ) and an extra hour for good measure , gives you a minimum of three hours , and that doesn't count in any unforeseen problems , I would go the next day .

This S Bahn connection from the airport should be achievable.

SBA 6874
Dep 15:04 MUENCHEN FLUGHAFEN TERMINAL (Germany)
Arr 15:35 MUENCHEN OST (Germany)

ECB 83

Not near enough time. The airport is 45 minutes from the main train station.

Sorry, my bad, The train leaves at 1534.
Thanks for all your responses.
I think that makes sense, Steve
Better to allow a min of 3 hours and even then you're right something may come up with delays
I'll spend the night in Munich.

Any suggestions for an affordable place near the station that proved recently to be a good choice?

There is also a train at 17:34 to Innsbruck connecting to a train to Bolzano. It is a 1 hour and 42 minute connection time, enough time for a beer or two at the station bar.

I was looking at direct routes but you are correct Sam, there is the one you mention at 1734 making a connection in Innsbruck and and another one at 1744 making a couple connections and they get in to Bozen shortly after 2300 and both give me about 3.5 hours to make the connection.

Thanks all for the input. I'll sleep on it now cause I won't be getting much once I depart Seattle.

We should all have such problems, right?

As previously stated you might catch EC83 to Bozen if you do not transfer at the main station but at Munich East (München Ostbahnhof), dep. 15:44. Given that 13:50 is the time of deboarding you have 1:13 to catch the 15:03 S-Bahn (S8) to Munich East. Personally, if everthing goes smooth I calculate one hour (if arriving at terminal 2 like you do) from deboarding to the S-Bahn. So, under optimal circumstances you might make it. But you should not buy a preebooked saver fare ticket since it will be invalid if you miss the train.

Greg , if you stay overnight and go to Bolzano the next day , here is an efficient and relaxed way to handle this - Leave the airport and buy a Munich network day ticket ( covers your trip from the airport into town as well as all public transport that day -http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/tickets-fares/tickets/day-tickets/single-day-ticket/index.html Take the S-8 to Ostbahnhof and book a room ( in advance ) for the Motel One at Haidenauplatz . At Ostbahnhof , jump on the #19 tram which will shoot you right in front of the hotel ( a few minutes ) check in , go back to Ostbahnhof and take the S Bahn into the center , Enjoy the rest of your day in town and when you are ready for bed , go back to your hotel ( all of this is , of course covered by your day ticket ) and take the most convenient train to Bolzano the next day . https://www.google.com/maps/place/Haidenauplatz/@48.1297361,11.6055515,17.25z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x479e757d71693fe3:0xc2978b9388f8647d!8m2!3d48.1320593!4d11.6095213

Thank you sla019 and David,

Maybe not crazy, just a little slow.
I didn't get the distinction David was making, previously, so thank you for you politely pointing it out to me, again.
It's a definite possibility. The east station's a lot closer to airport and if the plane lands on time and there are no delays it should work. I certainly should be able to make it from term 2 to term 1, get a ticket and board the train in that time frame if everything goes as scheduled.
Thank you both.

Thanks again for your help.

if the plane lands on time

If it's a trans-Atlantic flight, that's not a very good assumption. I've flown to Germany 10 times in the last 13 years and been one hour late two, maybe three times. I've been tracking the Denver to Frankfurt non-stop flight and it was last 38 minutes yesterday and 56 minutes today.

Unless you have full fare, flexible tickets, that you could use on any of the bi-hourly ECs to Bolzano, I would agree with the advice to spend the night in Munich and go the following day when you know you can catch the specified train.

If you haven't reserved the train yet, make the ticket from Munich Marienplatz to Bolzano. The price would be the same as from the Hbf or Ost, but the ticket would include the S-Bahn from Marienplatz to Ost. That way you could stay at one of the Altstadt hotels often recommended here and be within walking distance of the restaurants and sights in the old town. The next day, you could take the S-Bahn to Munich Ost to catch the train to Italy, and it would be included in the same fare. There are a lot of hotels near Marienplatz and the Viktualienmarkt. My own recommendation would be Pension Lindner.

Wow Steven,

That's a plan. Sometimes you do get what you ask for. Yes, that's a great back up plan.

Thank you!

Thank you Lee. That is a great idea. Wow, so appreciated!

From Seattle I am hoping for better arrival times flying Lufthansa than Delta. but even so.. This is great information. And the food at WIRTSHAUS AYINGERS was much to my liking last time I was there.

Greg , you could also follow Lee's suggestion and just go to Marienplatz looking at the hotels in that location , I think that might be an even more efficient way to do this . Look at the map of the area , and check hotel prices to see what is available . Traveling the next day is a lot less stress .

Absolutely, I planned a few days this time for jet lag and don't need the stress. I'm headed down for 15 days hiking in the dolomites, a childhood dream and then heading over to Mt. Blanc, Chamonix and Zermatt . It's a bucket list thing.

Thank you so much.

Very good point. The same is true for any S-Bahn station in the city, i.e. for any station which has an entry of the format "München-NN" (München-Pasing, München-Obermenzig etc.) in the
DB ticketing system.

Yeah, I picked Marienplatz because I think that is the most interesting part of Munich, but anywhere on the S-Bahn system would work. If you found an accommodation near the Dachau Bahnhof and wanted to see the Memorial that day, that would work, or you could stay out in Erding and visit the spa. You have lots of options. But if you wanted to stay somewhere only accessible by conveyance of the MVV other than the S-Bahn (like the U-Bahn to Nordfreidhof), your ticket would not cover that part.

OK, you're throwing a bunch of great info at me and I think I caught it

Stephen is speaking about the local transportation and that I could use a MVV fair from the airport to economize on getting from the airport into town and then around town until 6am the next morning. That looks like a good option for 11.60 E because it's what the train or bus would cost alone if I purchased a standard ticket into town.

Lee pointed out that I could book the ticket to Bozen from Marienplatz if I stayed in downtown basically giving me the S Bahn free along with the trip to Bozen or anywhere on the S line, which sla019 pointed out and Stephen reiterated needs to have Munchen preceding the station name on the ticket thereby giving me a large number of options for where I could possibly overnight stay in Munich and not have to pay for the S bahn in addition to the trip from Munich train station to Bozen.

Let me know if I missed anything
Thanks again.
