Transfer NUREMBERG TO Frankfurt airport from river cruise

I am planning a flight on United out of Frankfurt approximate departure 11:00AM after a River cruise. How soon would I need to be on a train in Nuremberg to be able to make this flight in Frankfurt, comfortably?
Would you suggest and overnight layover to explore Frankfurt for a day instead?
By this time I may be toured out but open for suggestions. By this point in my travels I may be more of a foodie and walk by tourist preferring less “in depth” historical touring.
If I do a layover what is the best hotel to stay at for easy and quick transport to the airport?
Traveling in October.

with an 11:00 departure you need to be checking in by 8:00.

The 05:28 from Nuremburg will get you to the Fernbahnhof (long distance) station at the airport at 07:56.

Anything later will be too late.

How early will they let you off the ship?

I will always suggest getting as close to the airport as possible if you have a morning flight (even a late morning). It's just too stressful to worry about trying to get to the airport. What if there's an accident on the tracks? That happened on a route I was taking and it delayed me by more than an hour or so. It's much easier on the nerves to stay near the airport.

It sounds like getting to Frankfurt early is an option, so I would suggest finding a hotel in Frankfurt for that last night. Even if you are "toured out" you can always just have a nice meal and walk around enjoying the scenery.

Thanks for both of your input. I am told we can get off the ship before 6AM but still question that. I think we will go with booking a hotel at the airport and enjoying one day in Frankfurt.

On one of Ricks downloads I listened to about Frankfort, the person on the recoding with him talk about one of her favorite things to do in Frankfurt was visiting a street in the financial area with great eats to “eat yourself silly” for lunch and many business people go there for lunch breaks. I have difficulty understanding the name of the street. Does anyone have any idea what it may be?
Also, would the hop on hop off bus be worth doing for the day?

I'd suggest finding a hotel in Frankfurt instead of at the airport.

Stay in the city instead of the airport.
I know Rick likes the Fressgasse for some reason, but there are better areas to eat. Depending on the day of the week, there may be one of our wonderful Farmers Markets in the city center. Thur. Fri. or Sat. Other weekdays, head to the Klein Markt Halle. The best food is over in the Applewine Pub district in Sachsenhausen. Places like Dauth-Schneider, Applewine Dax, Lorsbacher Tal, are all great.
The better translation for the Fressgasse is "Eat like an Animal Alley" . Fressen is the German verb for eating, but only for animals. Gasse means alley or lane.

Yes, Frankfurt has excellent S-Bahns that include the airport. I suppose if you're flying on a weekend you need to check the weekend train schedule. You could certainly lean towards a hotel near that line. I would not ignore United's 3-hour check-in rule, especially in Coach class.

It's a matter of sit-down preference maybe, but we enjoyed eating standing up in a very modern covered market.

Just to make sure, did your cruise include the scenic Middle Rhine, say Bingen to St. Goar?

I will also encourage a Frankfurt on Foot tour. I thoroughly enjoyed mine!

... and for my night before an 11:00 am flight out of Frankfurt I stayed at the Motel One Römer. Great location! Five minute walk to a U-station that quickly gets you to the main train station, where you can catch the S to the airport. There was a train strike that affected the S trains to the airport on the morning of my departure (announced ahead of time), so I just hired a driver to pick me up and had a 15-minute ride to the airport.

We have stayed at the Marriott and Sheraton hotels that are actually in the Frankfurt airport. It's just so easy to walk to your gate from your hotel room. It is a 15 minute walk, I'd guess, but no stress. By the end of a trip, I'm always tired and like to keep transfers simple.
Safe travels!

Just one more option to add since I recently had a 10am flight out of FRA, you can also stay in central Mannheim. The hotels are usually much cheaper than in Frankfurt and you are only 30mins from FRA by ICE train (it was 12€ for my ticket).

I personally would opt for traveling to Frankfurt a day early. I have stayed 3 times at the Hotel Excelsior, which is literally across a side street from the Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof. Takes about 1 minute to get there. On one other trip my husband and I stayed at the Savoy which is almost as close. Probably 3-5 minutes to allow for crossing several streets. Breakfast buffet at Excelsior was good. Breakfast not included at Savoy. There are many things to see in Frankfurt.

I would not go to either the Savoy or the Excelsior right now. They seem to have really deteriorated from the Covid situation and look really raggady and this side of the train station is just not very nice right now.
The other side (north exit) has nicer hotels like Hamburger Hof, Flemings and Steigenberger. i would choose those instead. There is no real need to stay near the main station though. Go more central, like Motel One, Moxy, Flemings City or the Hilton. The trains to the airport (S-8 and S-9) also stop at the Hauptwache.
