Trains Munich > Prague > Berlin

I am one of those people who like to have my travel itineraries wired in advance. And, it has worked for me in the past. So, I was thinking of buying train tickets for my trip, in advance.

For Munich to Prague, tickets seem pretty reasonable (50 Euro for two of us) when purchased on the Czech site (www.cd.cz).

For Prague to Berlin (via Dresden) the the German Bahn site allows a stopover in Dresden and also seems reasonable (78 Euro for two.)

The amounts seem reasonable, and , aside from being nonrefundable, is there any reason not to book these in advance through these sites?

Thanks.

"is there any reason not to book these in advance through these sites?"

If you can commit to riding those specific trains, I would say, no, there's no reason not to. Go for it.

I'd only add that be sure that the Czech site has "print at home" tickets. Since originating in Germany, you will not be able to collect them at a Czech train station. This is the case with Swiss tickets originating outside of Switzerland. I have no experience of buying form Czech Rail.

Lee has posted on a way to buy last minute tickets by buying a "Bayern-Boehmen" ticket in Germany from Munich to Plzen for 30.50 euro for 2, then continuing on to Prague with a local low price ticket on Czech Rail. I have not done this either. http://www.bahn.de/regional/view/regionen/bayern/freizeit/bayern_boehmen_ticket.shtml#

It should be noted that the Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket, like the Bayern-Ticket, is an all day pass for regional trains, which do not have seat reservations, so advance purchase is not necessary. The price for two travelers is 30,50€. The Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket will take you as far as Pilsen; use Czech Rail tickets for Pilsen to Prague.

There are four direct trains from Munich to Prague per day leaving Munich Hbf at 4:55, 9:01, 12:44, and 17:02. They take 5¾ to 6 hours. I've been told, but cannot confirm, that you can purchase the Pilsen to Prague ticket on the train from the conductor in the Czech Republic for about 100 Kc (less then 4€/person). I'm not sure if the conductor takes euro.

Advance purchase tickets, which start at 29€/person for the bus from Munich and go up as the lower priced tickets sell out, can be either a Bahn Intercity bus from the Hackerbrücke ZOB or an ICE to Nürnberg and IC bus from there.

As for Prague to Berlin, you can make a stopover in Dresden, but it has to be for a specific duration (in two hours increments) in Dresden. The Eurocity train runs every 2 hours from 6:29 leaving Prague. The 18:29 connection is an IC to Berlin-Lichtenberg station and an S-Bahn from there.

bgi,

i did the Munich to Prague on my first leg of my trip this year. Berlin i hope to catch next year.

i found the trains nice and comfy for my trips. I know that the bus from Munich to Prague is also used at takes a few minutes less time, but i will choose a train over a bus.

happy trails.

The four trains I mentioned are run by ALX, a privatized company running trains on German routes. They use new, modern cars. When I went from Bayerisch Eisenstein to Pilsen, I was suppose to connect with the ALX train from Munich, but, due to a bus shuttle around some track work, the ALX train was pulling out when I arrived. The next train to Prague, an hour later was a very old Czech Rail coach, not up to the German standards.

I'm just saying, try to catch one of the direct ALX trains from Munich to Prague.
