Trains: Munich and the Bavarian Alps and Austria

I’m trying to figure out what I need for train travel. Here’s my basic itinerary.

May 24th Fly into Munich

May 27th Train or bus to Fussen (planing to visit sites on the way)

May 29th Train to Oberammergau

May 30th Train to Salzburg via Innsbruck

June 2nd Train and bus to Vienna via Piber (possibly go direct to Vienna and day trip to Piber another day)

June 6th Fly our of Vienna

Should I get a pass or point to point? Looking just at the train trips point to point is likely cheaper but the other benefits of the pass (like free use of the S-Bahn) might tip it the other way.

Free use of the S-Bahn is only on the counted travel days of the pass, probably 4 days in your case. It's such a small value that it's unlikely to tip any scales. See our links for slow-train day-tickets that you can use around Bavaria. On the Salzburg-Vienna leg in Austria, Westbahn trains can be cheaper than the national railway.

The ricksteves info on day passes needs some updating. There is no more Schönes Wochenende ticket, for example.

May 24: Get the airport-city day ticket at the airport train station.

May 27: Get a Bayern ticket at Munich station: http://munich-touristinfo.de/Bavaria-Ticket.htm

May 29: You will take bus 9606 for the 40-minute ride from Füssen to Oberammergau. A day ticket costs 10.40 Euros;

If the driver says the standard one-way (Einfach) fare is more than that, ask for the day ticket (Tagesticket.)
