Trains

Arriving Munich morning of 12/27. Need to get to Nuremburg. I have several questions:
1. Better to take train from Airport to main train station in Munich and switch, or take Uber to main train station from airport?
2. Should train tickets be booked in advance or can ticket be purchased at airport or main train station? If so, are seat reservations required.

TIA

Lufthansa runs an express coach from MUC to Nurnberg.

Otherwise: Just buy a ticket MUC - Nurnberg. You can buy a flexpreis ticket in advance. Such a ticket is good for any train on the route, so you can then just proceed by taking the next train that comes along. Such tickets do not automatically come with reservations but these are not required.

What you could do is buy a flexpreis ticket, and a reservation for the train you are most likely going to be able to take. If you miss that one because of a delay on your flight you still have your ticket. If you get to the main station earlier than expected and see that there is an earlier train you can jsut take that, and see if there are seats...

If you’re going straight to the Munich train station I can’t see any reason to use the roads. Just take one if the S-Bahn routes from MUC to Hauptbahnhof and head upstairs to catch a Nürnberg train.

The advantage of taking the train to Munich Hbf, as the S-bahn goes every 10 minutes and drops you just below the station so then you just take the escalator up to the station. A taxi will drop you outside the station and it is still under construction so it may be a challenge to find your way inside. Seat reservations are only available for ICE trains from Munich to Nuremberg. You can buy at the airport.

If you are not in a huge hurry, you can use a Bayern Ticket and travel on only regional trains to Nuremberg. Cost is 29 EUR for the first person and 10 EUR for each additional person up to 5 total traveling together. Depart the airport after 9 am and it includes the S-bahn to Munich Hbf. Also gives free public transportation in Nuremberg for the rest of the day.

If you are not in a huge hurry, you can use a Bayern Ticket and travel on only regional trains to Nuremberg.

That option doesn't even take much longer than the ICE option if you take a train from the airport directly to Regensburg and transfer there to a RE to Nuremberg. Total travel time is 2:30. Departure every two hours at 10:16, 12:16, 14:16 etc. Costs 39/2 using the Bayern Ticket (the ICE flex price is about 120/2). The ICE connection from MUC via the Hbf to Nuremberg takes between 2:05 and 2:19, so you lose a maximum of 25 and a minimum of 11 minutes. Earning €80 in 11 minutes is not bad at all, I think. Especially as the ICE is at least 10 minutes late anyway (unless DB Fernverkehr is determined to annoy you and runs on time for once).
