Train type between Nuremberg and Salzburg

Hi !

We currently are in Nuremberg and we're leavings for Salzburg saturday. I havent book my train ticket earlier because we though that the Bavaria pass would be the better and most cheap solution.

Now we have second though. We took a RE train between Nuremberg and Bamberg and it was perfect for that short trip. I dont know if we ( and our kids ) could do it in that type of train for 5 hours. Plus we dont know we're we could put all our luggage in those trains. Ice or ic are now very expensive. What would you do?

Unfortunately you don't have much choice for train travel except paying the full price for IC/ICE or taking the Regio Express. If you have a lot of luggage, many RE trains have areas intended primarily for bicycles that you could put your luggage in, but you'd need to sit close to it for safety.

The other thing to try is that due to regulatory liberalisation there are now an increasing number of long-distance bus companies in Germany that are competing with railways on price - try FlixBus, Berlin Linien Bus, Dein Bus, and Mein Fernbus to see if they offer services between those cities.

If you have look closely at the train schedules with the Bayern ticket, you will see that the actual time on the train is not 5 hours - in some cases it's only 3.5 hours. If you board the 11:10 RE train out of Nuremberg, you take two trains to Salzburg; train #1 (Regional Express) will be in Munich in less than 2 hours - then you'll have a long break there, like an hour, having lunch or whatever - then you'll board your second train for Salzburg, and again you'll be there in less than 2 hours.

Some of the regional trains are tight on space but not all - there's a lot of variation in train design. Usually there is some under-seat space for bags as well as overhead racks. Some have cars with extra open floor space for bikes and large luggage, areas with flip-down seats.

You can spend over E100 if you want to (instead of E28 Bayern Ticket) for the high-speed trains but there are no direct high-speed trains either - you still need two trains, and your actual time on the trains will be 2.7 - 3 hours with the ICE/IC/RJ trains. Hard to see how it's worth 4 times the expense, IMO.

If you board the 11:10 RE train out of Nuremberg, you take two trains to Salzburg;

This is the so called Nürnberg-München Express, which runs every other hour at (or around) minute 10 (9.10 - 11.10 etc.). It is composed of ex IC cars, a very different typ of car from the S-Bahn cars you met on the Nuremberg-Bamberg leg. Still, you should go to the station early, since theses trains are quite full every time.

In addition of the high speed RE that runs from Nürnberg to Munich, the Meridian train from Munich to Salzburg will probably be a modern, double-deck RE, very smooth and quiet.

Thanks for all those answers !

Paying 4 times the price is too much for the benefit. For some its only a small price to pay but we could/should use those 70+ euros elsewhere. Its gonna be the 11:00 hour train.

One more thing, I cant see how getting earlier at the station would allows us better place on the train since once the train is there everyone jump in it no matter who arrive first.

Those two trains originate at Nürnberg Hbf and Munich Hbf, respectively, so they will be sitting there for some time in advance of departure time. Some people will be there when the train comes in, but some others will arrive later, like from connecting trains. If you are there early, you'll beat the later arrivers. If you eat lunch in the food court in Munich, you can sit opposite track 11 and watch for the train to come in.

When I have luggage in tow and have to take the RE, about half the time I sit in the bike area, much more convenient and spacious. There have been times when it was crowded with bikes too...just luck. Going Nürnberg to Salzburg I would take the ICE and transfer at Munich.

No. The Bayern Ticket gets you to Salzburg Hbf and that is it. You'll be in Austria then and need to get local transport tickets when you arrive.

  1. As Lee has explained above, that train arrives from München at 10:48 and leaves again for Munich at 11:10, so it stands over 20 minutes at track 13 (double ckeck track # at the indicators in the main hall). Just be there upon its arrival and you won't have a problem to capture four seats.

  2. The Bayern ticket does NOT cover local transport in Salzburg. Salzburg is in Austria, so the don't have any reason to honor a Bavarian transport ticket. You can go, of course, to Salzburg Hbf on your Bayern Ticket, since that station has been since its beginnigs the technical border betwen the Bavarian and the Austrian train networks.

  3. VGN ticket machines do not sell Bayern Tickets. Either book it online or ask the people at your hotel to book one via internet for you. Or get it out of a DB ticket machine at the station and send your son meanwhile ahead to track 13 to occupy four seats for you ;)

Have a good trip.

Well now it seems that we have to found a way to go to Salzburg without passing by Munich.....

You can go from Nürnberg to Salzburg via Regensburg and Mühldorf, but it will take longer. Why?

Some might think it is a more interesting trip.
