4 of us are looking to travel from Munich to Uberlingen and back April 14-April 17th. As we are rather unfamiliar with German train travel, if we were to take the sparpreis or super sparpreis and were to miss a connection, would we be out of luck or could we hop on another local train? I feel like we need to have some flexibility time wise should we get turned around when trying to make the connection.
As I look at the schedule from Munich to Überlilngen, it doesn't look like there is any great time benefit from using a connection with a long distance train (ICE/IC/EC). Using all regional trains allows you avoid the train specific feature of a Sparpreis ticket and to use a Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket. A QdL-Ticket would cost 73€ for two people and would allow you unlimited travel on regional trains in Germany all day, from 9am to 3am the following day on work days. On a Sat or Sun, you could start your travel anytime after midnight.
Another advantage of the QdL-Ticket is that you don't need advance purchase; you can but the ticket for the same price just before departure.
I can see a 3H49 connection leaving Munich 9:52 with changes at Lindau and Friedrichshafen, arriving in Überlingen at 13:41.
out of luck, no hop on to the next one without new tickets.
That is not correct. If a connection is missed due to the delay of a preceding train, the train commitment is canceled and the onward journey is possible with any other train. In addition, on this specific connection it is only possible to use a long-distance train as far as Lindau or Ulm anyway. The choice of subsequent local trains (Lindau-Friedrichshafen-Überlingen or Ulm-Friedrichshafen-Überlingen) is always free, even with saver fares (cf. https://int.bahn.de/en/faq/saver-fare-train-specific-travel). The local trains from Lindau or Ulm shown on the ticket are only suggestions for the best connection.

Lee is right. The connection with regional trains can even be faster because it takes the direct route via Kißlegg and Aulendorf. And since April 14th is a Sunday, you could use the early connection RE96 - RB 53 - IR3 dep. Munich 7:53 (duration 3:16).
Will you be using any other public transport while in Germany? I would suggest a D ticket might be the best value for your entire trip if using regional trains.
Thank you all for your replies! Only travel would be the round trip Munich- Überlingen.
