Train travel germany

Can you use the flexipass over the course of any thirty days or is it restricted to a specific month. And will a flexipass work for a trip from the Frankfurt airport to Strasbourg? As I read the rules for the flexpass twin it includes all travel during a specified day so it can be used for a round trip from say Fussen to Munich and back?

I'm assuming you are talking about the German Rail Pass and not the €49 monthly pass The German rail pass (the flexible pass) can be used for up to 15 days of travel within a one month period. You have to select the dates and once they're used up, that's it. So as long as your round trip from Fussen to Munich happens during those selected dates, you're good to go.

Keep in mind that your pass will take you only to the French border, but you can buy an inexpensive ticket from Kehl to Strasbourg.

Yes also to Munich - Füssen - Munich.

However, because the cost per day of a railpass is kinda high (€86/per day for two on a 5-day twinpass flexi version, for example,) that might not be a good use of the travel day. This trip is possible without a GRP for €36/2 on a normal ticket you buy at the station in Munich.

You should present your day-by-day travel plan so we can advise you in an accurate way how many rail pass days you might need (if any.)

I would agree with Russ on that. Unless you will be taking the train extensively and to long distance places, it really makes no financial sense to use a rail pass, when it's so simple to just buy point-to-point or regional tickets.

Frankfurt airport to Strasbourg to Munich with two side trips to Dachau and the castles then to Rothenburg and then to Erfurt and then back to Frankfurt. So if I get the pass only for say Frankfurt airport to say Kehl for one day then from Kehl to Munich for 2 day then Munich to Rothenburg for the third, then to Erfurt for the fourth and from Erfurt to Frankfurt for the five days of passes it seems a lot cheaper on the flexipass twin than individual tickets. Then just pay for Kehl to Strasbourg and back and for side trip to Fussen or use a bus tour.

Without dates I can't compare costs, but if you have done that accurately, your plan for a 5-day flexipass for two looks pretty reasonable on the surface. Some concerns...

1) Mardee advised Kehl as a place to ticket from separately. However, that will work only if you are riding the regional train to or through Kehl, as I understand it. You may actually need to ticket from Karlsruhe if you intend to ride the high-speed trains all the way. And if you do, then you'll need to use the rail pass PLUS the additional high-speed ticket, which in fact might end up costing more than if you just shopped for a saver fare ticket from Frankfurt to Strasbourg. YOU MAY HAVE THE SAME ISSUE WITH STRASBOURG > MUNICH AS WELL. Perhaps a 3-day GRP would work. Check total costs and compare.

Alternatively... Don't stay in Strasbourg. A popular and lovely place to stay in Germany is GENGENBACH. From Gengenbach to Strasbourg and back takes about an hour each way, so a day trip from there is quite reasonable... also, a KONUS card is provided to all Gengenbach guests for free train travel to Kehl. THEN you can buy a 24-hr. ticket for the round trip to Strasbourg on the regional trains for a discounted price. A 5-day GRP would work in this case for the rest.

2) YOU CAN BUY THE GRP AT THE AIRPORT WHEN YOU ARRIVE. This allows you to get advice and instructions for use and allows you a large window just incase your plans have to change for some reason. Refunds on the GRP are NOT free.

I'd like to revise one thing...

"You may actually need to ticket from Karlsruhe if you intend to ride the high-speed trains all the way."

What you could do here is catch a direct high-speed train from FRA to OFFENBURG on the GRP and transfer there to the regional train to Kehl and Strasbourg. That Europass 24hr mini ticket on the link I provided will now work for you for Kehl > Strasbourg. It's available at the station in Offenburg from a ticket machine. The GRP covers the Offenburg > Kehl segment. There's no change of train in Kehl, just stay on.

Day trips from Munich...

Dachau, KZ-Gedenkstätte is the destination name for the Concentration Camp, which I assume you are visiting rather than the town itself. Enter that at the MVV page to explore your transport and ticketing options. MVV is Munich's local transport authority:

For Füssen use the DB site:
