Three adults will be traveling from Nurnberg to Vienna via train June 24. Then to Salzburg June 27, to Munich June 29, to Dresden July 2 and finally to Berlin July 3. What is the most efficient and least expensive way to travel from Nurnberg to Vienna? How long does that trip take? Should I be able to buy tickets for all those segments on my travel days or is it better to buy in advance?

There are direct trains every 2 hours from Nuremberg to Vienna and it takes 4 hours and 39 minutes. If you buy now with a Sparpreis ticket (non-changeable, refundable with a fee of 17.50 EUR until 1 day before departure) for 132 EUR total for 3.
Vienna-Salzburg can be done using Westbahn with tickets bought on the train. 76.50 EUR total for 3.
Salzburg- Munich with a Bayern ticket bought up to departure time for 33 EUR total for 3. After 9 am weekdays or all day weekends on regional trains. Ticket will include Munich public transit for the rest of the day.
Munich- Dresden and Dresden-Berlin see Sparpreis tickets above.
The train is generally the quickest and most comfortable option. Advance booking gives considerable discount. For trains from, to or within Germany, buy your tickets at www.bahn.de/p_en/view/index.shtml.; for trains within Austria at https://tickets.oebb.at/en/ticket Discounted train tickets are for a specific time and date.
In case you don't want/can't purchase discounted tickets in advance, then it is also possible to travel rather cheaply even when buying train tickets before departure. E.g. from Nurnberg to Vienna you can travel for as low as 33+37 euro for all 3 in total with Bavaria Ticket for German and Einfach-Raus-Ticket for Austrian legs, you'll have to use somewhat slower regional trains, but still it's a good deal. For travels in Germany besides regional passes like Bavaria ticket you can as well use passes like Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket or Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket
To you and anyone who's considering taking trains in Germany and elsewhere in Europe, get the DB rail app for your phone, it gives you schedules and live train updates for trains all over the place. Used it last year in Germany and Austria and again this year to get schedules for trains in Belgium and France.
