Train travel from Fussen to Salzburg

I am planning on a vacation in August and I have plans to stay in Fussen for 2 days. I will travel from Munich to Fussen, then Fussen to Salzburg for 2 days. My question is what is the best options for train tickets. Should I buy separate tickets from Fussen to Munich, then a ticket from Munich to Salzburg? I think I understand the purchasing from Munich to Fussen, but I am unsure what is the most economic and direct route.

A good rule of thumb for booking train travel is:

  • Book with the national railway of the country where your trip starts. So in this case book at bahn.de
  • Always try to book end-to-end. Do not try to second guess what the best route is. Let the computer figure that out for you. So book München to Füssen, and Füssen to Salzburg.

For these routes, there is no "booking" that must be done. 1 traveler, correct?

Munich > Füssen: At the station, buy a *€26 Regioticket Allgäu-Scwaben* from a ticket machine, then board any train or combination of trains (sometimes there's a change of train in Buchloe) that gets you to Füssen. This is a DAY PASS that is valid any day at any hour on regional trains for this route (which are the only trains that go to Füssen.)

Füssen > Salzburg:

Option 1: At the station: buy a €29 Bayern Ticket from a ticket machine. Then board the next train for Munich's main station. In Munich, board any regional train (BRB) train that day to Salzburg (which runs hourly.) The €29 Bayern Ticket is a day pass that is valid at any hour on Saturday or Sunday on regional (BRB) trains within Bavaria; on other days it is valid from 9 am onward.

Read about the Bayern Ticket here: https://int.bahn.de/en/offers/regional

Option 2: Pre-purchase a saver fare ticket for Füssen > Salzburg which includes a long-distance train (like the EC or RJX) for the Munich > Salzburg segment (and of course also includes the regional train trip from Füssen > Munich. Prices vary by day. These long-distance trains are a few minutes faster than regional trains. But the saver fare tickets for these EC/RJX trains are non-refundable, and they are tied to specific trains, and your trip is 7 months from now... so you should be certain about the day and time of your travel, or comfortable with the idea of "non-refundable." Alternatively, buy a "flex-fare" ticket (about €36 for these trains) whenever you wish. This kind of ticket is refundable and can be bought anytime you like.

Regional trains that can be used with the two day passes: Find schedules for these by clicking on "modes of transport" and then selecting "local transport only"...
