Train Travel from Frankfurt

We will be in Germany Nov. 29 - Dec. 5. Can we easily travel by train from Frankfurt Airport to Nuremburg? If so, should we try to purchase tickets in advance. Thanks for your help.

Train is probably the best way of doing that trip. If you want to book in advance go to www.bahn.com NOW as the cheap tickets are liable to sell out if they haven't already. However, the cheap tickets are strictly limited to a specific train, so if your flight is delayed you will have to buy new tickets at full fare.

You can also go from FRA to Frankfurt Hbf on any S-bahn, then take any RE (Regional Express) from Frankfurt Hbf to Würzburg, then another RE from Wurzburg to Nürnberg. These are all regional trains, so you can make the trip using a local (RMV) ticket from FRA to Kahl (the first stop on the RE in Bavaria) and a Bayern-Ticket from Kahl to Nurnberg, without relying on specific trains. The trip will take just under 4 hrs vs 2½ hrs by ICE. You won't have to pay full fare or worry about a late flight arrival.

The RMV ticket is 8,10€/adult. The Bayern-Ticket for two will cost 28€ for two if you buy it from a ticket automat at the airport or at the Frankfurt Hbf, 2€ more if you but it from a ticket counter. The total cost for two will be 44,20€ and you won't be risking a late flight arrival.

The ticketing strategy Lee suggests means you do NOT have to pre-purchase tickets. Those tickets he mentions are available from ticket machines at FRA's Regionalbahnhof station. No reservations are needed (or even possible for that matter.)

Note also that although one ticket ends in Kahl and the other starts in Kahl, you do NOT get off the train in Kahl.

Keep in mind, there is a direct ICE train at least every hour from the airport to Nuremberg, often more. The walk-up fare is 58 euro per person and it takes 2 1/2 hours.
