Train Tickets - Salzburg to Paris CDG

Hello Fellow Travelers,

I'm posting this in the Germany forum because the questions are about German rail. We want to buy train tickets online in advance to travel from Salzburg to Paris CDG on Oct 8. Running into some issues.

The German rail site, bahn.com, shows a 10:00 departure, arriving at 19:02, with 3 changes. This is the one we want. I wanted to buy on Trainline.com (easy to use, recently bought TGV tickets there with ease), but Trainline does not list that departure. It shows a 10:15 departure with the same arrival time, but with 4 changes. Is this just because Trainline doesn't have access to all possible tickets/routes?

Since Trainline doesn't seem to offer exactly what we want, we thought we'd buy direct from bahn.com. But that website displays "unknown tariff abroad", along with a "Price Request" button. When I click that button and enter the passenger ages as requested, I still do not see any fares. The system wants me to send a message to the service center and receive tickets by post. Huh?! Why can't I just buy these tickets on bahn.com? Is the fact that there are 3 countries involved making it impossible to see prices and book online?

One final question. bahn.com displays a link that says "seat only (no ticket)" What does that mean? I could understand ticket and no seat, but not seat without a ticket. If I were to buy on bahn.com, would I be able to book tickets and seats for this journey?

Thank you for any advice.

I don't see exactly what you want at www.bahn.com.

The 10:00 am departure shows a connection at Stuttgart arriving at Paris Est, then you connect on your own to Paris Nord, then an RER to Paris CDG arriving at 19:10. DB cannot sell you an RER ticket or tell you how to make the transfer. You could walk, or take a bus, or the Metro. If you ask to buy tickets just to Paris Est, they can do that. I don't think Trainline can sell RER tickets either.

The 10:15 departure connects at Munich, then Stuttgart, then Strasbourg, then Marne La Vallee-Chessy, arriving at Paris CDG at 19:02. I suspect that again, DB cannot sell you the connecting TGV at Marne La Vallee-Chessy, because it does not originate in Germany, but Trainline can because they sell both French and German train tickets (Salzburg is considered a German station for ticketing purposes).

I suggest you buy tickets to Paris Est and buy the connection on your own out of the ticket machine at Paris Est (10.50 EUR per person) or the multi transfer tickets from Trainline if you want to avoid the hassle of changing stations in Paris.

The ticket prices are indicated on bahn.com if you take the morning departure requiring 2 transfers ( not 3) on 10/8/18. The savings price is 79 Euro, Salzburg to Paris Est. You change in Munich and Mannheim...very straight forward, arriving in Paris Est at 1651 hrs, eleven minutes to get from one platform to the other, ie they're next to each other. I've taken that departure from Frankfurt and arrived at 1651 hrs.

Yes, there is "seat only, no ticket" option. That obviously does not apply to you.

In your case, if you are not flying out of CDG at night, I would arrive in Paris from Salzburg the day before your flight. Stay that night at CDG if you have a morning flight.

Now, if you're flight is at night, say 2100 hrs or later, after arriving at Paris Est at 1651 hrs, walk over to Gard du Nord (10 mins or less depending on your luggage) to take the RER B to CDG if you don't want to take a taxi from Paris Est...I wouldn't.

Counting walking and waiting time for the RER B etc, you should be at CDG by 1830 at the very latest, most likely even earlier. .. That still beats arriving at 1902 hrs.

I never use trainline.com to buy advance tickets. Use bahn.com. I use bahn.de.

To take a broader view, I hope you're planning to stay somewhere near CDG overnight before flying out in the morning. I would not trust trains over that distance to get me to an airport in time for an important flight.

Thank you, everyone, for your prompt and informative responses. Yes, I can see that the RER portion was what was preventing bahn.com from displaying prices, and trainline.com from displaying the trip we want. All problems solved if we book tickets to Gare de L'est. Then stroll over to Gare du Nord and buy a ticket to CDG.

Yes, Phillip, we are planning to spend the night at a CDG hotel before our flight out the next morning. Agree that wouldn't want to rely on train connections and on-time performance to make an important flight. Also, who wants to travel all day (even as delightful as train travel can be), and then endure airport hassle and a long flight without a break?!
