Train tickets: Munchen XXL??

Hello - In one day, my 16-year-old daughter and I will be taking the S2 train from Munich to the Dachua station; the bus to the memorial site; and then a train from the Dachau station to the Munich airport. Should we buy individual tickets for each journey or will the München XXL Gruppentageskarte be our best bet? Is it the most cost-effective option? Anything else we should know? Thank you in advance!

You'll need the entire network ticket to get to the airport.

Like Sam said the München XXL Gruppentageskarte doesn't cover travel to the airport. You best and cheapest option is to purchase a München Gruppentageskarte Gesamtnetz (entire network group day pass). This will be cheaper than purchasing individual trip tickets.

The MVV Gruppentageskarte Gesamtnetz (day ticket for up to five people for the entire Munich network costs 23,20€ and covers unlimited travel for both of you from downtown to the Dachau station, the bus to the memorial site, the bus back to Dachau, and the S-Bahn to the airport.

Here is the price table for Single Tageskarten ( single person day tickets) and Gruppen Tageskarten (group day tickets) in Munich. Here is a map showing the zones.

It looks like you will have luggage with you from downtown Munich to the airport. There is no place to store luggage at the Dachau Memorial. If I remember, there are some lockers at the Dachau Bahnhof, but I wouldn't count on them being available. I did this trip in 2009. I left my bag in a locker at the Munich Hbf, then came back to fetch it and took the next S-Bahn to the airport. (Actually, I had a place for the night in Freising, a 20 minutes bus trip to the airport in the morning, so I took the S-1 to Freising.)

Thanks Sam and DJ, I will definitely get the entire network ticket.

Lee - I was hoping to store our luggage at the Dachau Bahnhof, but we will be there July 1 so it will probably be crowded. So you're correct, I probably shouldn't take a chance that there is room. Will it add a lot of time to come all the way back to the Munich station before going to the airport? We need to be at the airport to check in at 4:40. Thanks -

Should take about 1 hour and 26 minutes with 24 minutes to retrieve your bags at the station. If you can make the 3:09 pm train at Dachau bf, you can be at the airport by 4:35 pm.

If you check your luggage at the Hbf, when you get to Dachau Bhf, there will be plenty of locker space, and I will look silly, but if you take it to Dachau, all the lockers will be filled. You can't win. But the results of leaving it at the Hbf are known and live-with-able, but the results of waiting until you get to Dachau and finding all the lockers filled would be disastrous. Take your pick.

If you leave your luggage at the Hbf, the next fastest S-Bahn to the airport might be the S8 via Ostbahnhof. Be sure to check the schedules.

Excellent advice, thanks to you both.
