Train Ticket Suggestions

Hello! My son is going to Germany by himself this September for a few music performances and I am trying to help plan things from here so it will go smoothly for him. He will be taking four train trips in total, and the first two trips seem to qualify for the Bavarian Pass, so I am guessing it would be fine for him to just purchase those as he needs them. The 3rd leg is where I'm having issues. It's not that long of a train ride, but it must fall outside of the scope of the Bavarian Pass, because even at the Super Spar price, it's well over 100 Euro. Is there a weekly pass he should consider or are there discounts for students (he's 19)? Or should I just have him buy the Bavarian Pass for the first two legs, deal with the high price for the 3rd leg, and then get a pretty cheap ticket to the airport? Here are the legs:
1. Munich airport to Salzburg
2. Salzburg to Kempten
3. Kempten to Kronberg
4. Kronberg to Frankfurt airport

Thanks in advance!!

There are several Kemptens and maybe a couple of Kronbergs, too so check that you have the correct ones. When I tested Kempten(Allgäu)Hbf to Kronberg(Taunus) (not knowing if these are right, but they looked likely), the advance fare for travel on Sept. 12, for instance, starts from 36 euros on some departures, and full fare is 87 euros.

Thank you Laura!!

Those are the same stations I put in, and the price that pops up for me is 155.70. Could it be because it's a Saturday? Also, I'm not entirely sure those are the right stations, but I think they are. The Kempten he needs to go to in by Munich (87435 Kempten Germany) and the Kronberg is very near Frankfurt (you can take the S4 there from Frankfurt). Frankly, I am always a little confused when there are multiple options - is there a trick to knowing which station is best?

I just noticed I had three people in the settings, so when I put it to 1, I get 35.90 - 51.90. Does that sound right?

Yes, those are the advance prices I'm seeing and I think they are the correct stations. This Kempten is south of Ulm, which is a connection point for the train ride. Hbf means main station. Some other options indicate (CH), which is Switzerland. Once you get a schedule on DB, you can click to see Details and then further click to see Map View.

Great, thank you!! So you recommend just getting the Bavarian pass for the first two legs and buying one way tickets for the last two?

Your original post made it sound like he was traveling alone. Three people? Which is it.

For one person, I would suggest the Savings Fare ticket and express trains. For three people, unless time is of the essence, you could might want to consider using regional trains (about 2 hour longer and 2 more changes) with a Quer durchs Land ticket (€60 for three). After all, getting there is half the fun.

Kronberg (Taunus) is within the RMV (Frankfurt metro district). A local, single trip ticket to the airport (with a change at Frankfurt Hbf, underground [tief] S-Bahnhof) is €4,95 pP.

Hi Lee! Sorry for the confusion. He is traveling alone, but the app still had three people as the default since we usually travel together. Fixed that and now I actually see that getting the Saver Fares is the cheapest way to go and as you point out, quicker. Thanks for your help as always!!
