I wanted to look up some possible schedules for the rail journey from Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Gengenbach. The DB site used an ICE train, but I am planning to get the D-ticket, which does not allow me to use the fast trains. Would someone be so kind as to tell me how to look up the schedule using just the regional trains, please?.

Click on "mode of transport" and select "local transport only." This will yield itineraries that use only regional trains.
This may be too long a trip to make, IMHO. You should perhaps add a 3rd destination in between those two cities.

Except that the fastest way with a D ticket is 5 hours and 20 minutes and the fastest way using ICE trains is 4 hours and 20 minutes. so it has more to do with the city pair you picked. Two off-the-beaten-track place, at least as far as rail infrastructure is concerned. If Rick built the railroad, there would be a dual carriage high speed line between them.
