Train route cancelled?

My ticket from Koblenz to Nurenburg is now showing as "connection no longer available" I am starting in Boppard and was planning on taking a regional train to Koblenz then ICE to Nurenburg.
I purchased the direct, refundable, ticket - and reserved seats in the family section since I will have a four year old.

My card has not been refunded yet. When I use the "search for alternative route" - it says nothing is available.

There are several routes with connections available. My questions
1. Is there any chance they will add back the route, and this is sorta a computer update thing?
2. Assuming no to the above, how do I get my refund?
3. I will likely have the D-ticket- so that covers the RB and RE routes, correct? so I should just search for the ICE ticket from whatever station I take the regional train to? (Koln or Frankfurt likely)

4. The Koln station says a walk of like 7 minutes, am I changing stations or is there sort of separate area that requires a long walk vs the other stations? Any other stations it would make sense to go through to limit to one connection and be relatively efficient time-wise?

FYI- it is ICE 27 route- wasn't sure if there was somewhere to check routes, and see more info

thanks!

edit- I found how to cancel the ticket to get a refund, but do I not get the seat reservation charge back - even if the train itself has cancelled? That doesn't seem right?

Assuming you still want to go to Nuremberg, you do not do anything except pick any of the available trains and take them. In Germany, just stop into a Reisezentrum at a larger train station and get new seat reservations for free on your new train itinerary.

4 Walk 7 minutes is just an estimate of making the change. You will walk down to the lower level, walk to the new platform, the go up a stairway to the new platform. They probably will have elevators if you have a lot of luggage. You will also have to walk along the train to get to your assigned carriage if you have seat reservations. The station in question appears to be at Koeln Mess/Deutz. The transfer is from Track 2 to Track 11, and is indicated to be a 57 meter walk (60 yards).

The note on the ICE on ICE 1621 is:

  1. Apr until 14. Dec 2024; not 13., 14. Apr, 30. May until 2. Jun 2024, 16. Jul until 12. Aug 2024

So the train is cancelled April 13&14, May 30 to June 2, and July 16 to August 12.

What is your travel date.

My ticket from Koblenz to Nurenburg is now showing as "connection no longer available"

This is probably a consequence of the closure of the Frankfurt-Fulda line and the resulting congestion on the Frankfurt-Würzburg line. You can use your ticket for any other train on the same travel day. Please tell us your travel day and the exact planned connection (not just the line number), then we can take a closer look.

PS. You will have to apply for a refund of the seat reservation separately, unless you simply exchange it, as Sam has described.

thanks-
Date - July 25 - three passengers (one is a 4 year old) going from Boppard to Nuremberg.
Original plan was to take regional train (VRM pass/d-ticket) to Koblenz, then ICE train to Nuremberg. With the cancellation I started to look Boppard to Nuremburg, and looks like I can take a regional train (using D-Ticket) to Cologne or Frankfurt, then IC train to Nuremburg.

Website doesn't allow me to just exchange - only option is to cancel and re-book (which is fine). Obviously I would like the seat reservation $$ back- it is about $10 or so, not a lot, and not worth spending a bunch of time on, but if I can email someone and get it back, obviously I will do that (not even sure how to apply for a refund?)

I would prefer to leave Boppard late morning and get in some time 3-5pm (check in time for our hotel in Nuremburg - which is right near the station)

Looks like best option is RE2 to Frankfurt then ICE627 to Nuremburg - it has an hour layover - but I guess if we can grab lunch or something to pass our time. There are a few that are shorter overall trips, but require 3 trains and have much shorter layovers - a little tight.

Likely will go with that unless the experts here have other ideas
thanks!
Scott

I don't believe you need to rebook. You have a ticket from Boppard to Nuremberg, so now that DB has cancelled your chosen train, you are free to take any train you want. Just hang on to your existing ticket and seat reservations and exchange the seat reservations. You could do that at Frankfurt Hbf, or earlier at another station, like Frankfurt airport if you are flying into there.

I see that carriage 25 on ICE 627 has family areas on it.

thanks sam- but a new ticket would be cheaper, so I think it makes sense to cancel and re-book (like 50 euro cheaper) since I will be riding the regional train further on my D-ticket - and I want to make sure I get the parent and child compartment if avaialble)

(I did not see your response to Sam about your new ticket being cheaper - my comments on keeping the old ticket have been deleted.)

Your trip is so far out right now that I would not bother reserving seats on some other train at this time. DB might end up moving you to some other train later on, and then you'll be messing with seat reservation changes once again.

Do you understand already how to find your train car and your reserved seats once you're ready to board?

well- this might be dumb, but I figured I could see the number on the outside of the train car? then go in and find the seat like you do on an airplane?

but based on you asking me, I am guessing there is more to it than that - lol

The ICE and other long-distance trains are often just way too long for that approach. And you have a child and stuff with you. You may end up lugging your stuff from car to car to car if you just hop on to a random car. You can position yourselves properly for a specific train car by using the "Wagenstandanzeiger" display that is located on each platform.

After arriving on the correct platform, look around and see where you are. The platforms are broken into sections (like A-F.) Your train car is designated to arrive at one of those areas, each of which is marked with a letter... F in the case below:
https://www.bkcw-bahnbilder.de/PictureGallery/pix/de/station/k/koblenz/hauptbahnhof/bfkoblenzhbf_bk1104070100.jpg

Now hunt down the Wagenstandanzeiger display to see where your train car will arrive; it's often next to the train arrival or departure schedules in a glass case that looks like this:

Find your train by departure time on that sheet, locate the train car noted on your ticket, and determine which zone (A-F) your car will arrive at.

This doesn't always work. Sometimes cars are not ordered as expected, or a train must use an alternative platform. But most of the time this will save you some hassle.

thanks Russ- makes sense! I guess I figured they would be in 1,2, 3, order - but maybe that is me thinking the German's are even more efficient than they are!

Is the car number marked on the outside of the car thou?

In the picture above...The electronic platform sign provides info for the upcoming departure including preliminary train stops, the final destination (Wien) and the train # (and there's also a graphic for which zone to stand in as well which refers to 1st and 2nd class cars.)

(Once that train has left and the track has emptied, the next departure from that platform will be shown.)

You MAY be able to identify the car number by electronic signage like you see here:

https://live.staticflickr.com/3823/11833882164_23df73ae6c.jpg

If the numbers match, you are good to go.

Of course train personnel on the platform can tell you where your specific car is. If you arrive a few minutes early after your longish layover in Frankfurt Hbf, you should have time to figure it out.

A funny note about that first picture... the scrolling message at the top is telling you in German that the departing train has cars in REVERSE ORDER! Which demonstrates two points...

  • The Wagenstandanzeiger is sometimes useless.

  • It's always wise to contact train personnel on the platform to determine whether you are boarding the right car -- or the right train, for that matter.

any idea how long a refund takes or if I had to request it for the ticket price (purchased a fully refundable ticket) - I cancelled it 24+ hours ago, but not showing anything on my credit card- not a big deal if it is slow, but wanted to make sure I didn't need to do anything else - FWIW there isn't anything listed in the "voucher" section of the DB app
