Train or Car to Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt from Munich?

hello,
We're planning to rent a car to Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt from Munich on second week of December 2015. Do you think that's okay?

Train would probably be easier. Frequent direct trains from Munich to Nuremberg, then U-Bahn to the market site.
By car, you would need to find parking, probably at a Park-and-Ride outside the city centre, then get public transport in. A car would take longer. And, being December, you would be driving back to Munich in the dark.

It would be easiest by train, but if by car, parking is pretty easy to find near the center of Nürnberg.

A bigger question is if the market is worth your time. If you want to visit Nürnberg anyway, then yes. Just for the market, though... it isn't sufficiently different from any other large city Christmas Market in Germany. It's merely just the most famous.

Another vote for the train. You can use the Muenchen-Nuernberg Regio-Ticket for 20 euro for the first person and 5 euro for each additional person up to 5 people traveling together. Leave after 9 am weekdays, or anytime weekends. That includes your return to Munich. The fastest direct regional trains go every 2 hours and take about 1 hour and 37 minutes.

Just a suggestion, Diana. This is a huge market and used to be one of my favorites. It is unbearably crowded on weekends now. Weekdays should be a little less packed. Not much fun when you can barely move down an aisle of vendors.

Exactly why I didn't enjoy it very much... also kind of impossible to make my way through with my dog. Even the Glühwein stalls were packed, so the usual atmosphere of relaxed socializing was killed.

I owned a car in Munich and I still took the train to the Christmas Market in Nuremburg. Less hassle and allowed me to have a Glühwein or Feuerzangenbowle (or two) and not worry about driving back.

That said, we only visited the market in Nuremburg once. Too crowded for us. There are plenty of very nice markets in Munich.

If you go, definitely take the train. The entrance to the Aldstadt is right across the street from the HBF. You can easily walk through the lovely old walled pedestrians-only part of the city to the market.

I lived in Nürnberg in the 1980's. The Christkindlesmarkt is wonderful and there are many regular restaurants to enjoy besides the food stands in the market itself.

I'm sure it is much, much more crowded now than it was back then, so going on a weekday is very good advice. I particularly liked being there after dark. It is magical.
