Train or car from Baden Baden to Strasbourg?

I am planning a trip in Sept driving from Munich to Baden Baden.I am spending a few days there and would like to travel to Strasbourg.Rick Steves seems to favor train travel.Which would be easier? Is parking a problem in Strasbourg? We just want to do a day trip.

I wouldn't want to park in Strasbourg - and I park on the street in Munich and London.

I use the park and ride lot at the end of a tram in Strasbourg, and then take the tram.

Baden Baden to Strasbourg by train can be OK too - any train from Baden Baden to Offenburg, then the little train from there to Strasbourg. The station in Strasbourg is very very modern and French.

Trams stop right outside the station in Strasbourg.

Actually, don't go all the way to Offenburg. Appenweier is the last stop from Baden-Baden before Offenburg, and the SWE from Offenburg stops there before turning off the main line to Kehl and Strasbourg. The ticket costs about 3€ less via Appenweier. You'll use the same trains either way, so the time is the same, but, besides saving money, you'll have more time to change in Appenweier than in Offenburg.

Find schedules on the German Rail (Bahn) schedule webpage.

Thank you for your information.I think we will try and chance the drive to Strasbourg. My friend thought we could park at the train station and tour the city by bus or on foot.Any further suggestions would be helpful..We are early risers so we would be getting to the city around 9 or 10 am.

You might reconsider your stay. Baden-Baden is mostly about spa treatments and casinos, high-end shopping. Rick includes B-B in the same breath as the Black Forest, but B-B definitely isn't a "cute old world village" and is not typical of Black Forest towns. If you're looking for something more representative / closer to the Black Forest, there are better options.

Most small towns (like those above but not Baden Baden) issue the KONUS card, which lets you use all the trains and buses for free within the Black Forest. You can use the KONUS card to travel as far as the French Border on the way to Strasbourg as well. A special day pass (around €11 for a couple or a family as I recall) called the "Europass 24h mini" is available to cover the route from the border to Strasbourg and back.
