My husband and I are flying into Munich at 8:10 am Saturday, May 12. We are wondering what is the cheapest, fastest, and easiest way to get from Munich to Lucerne, Switzerland that day. Is it best to book these train tickets in advance? If so, what kind of time frame should we use?
The easiest and fastest is to take the S-Bahn from the airport to Munich Central Station.
There is a train that leaves at 12:11 to Zurich. You transfer in Zurich for the train to Luzern.
It takes over 5 hours.
You should only book the tickets in advance if you know for certain that your flight will leave and arrive in Munich on time for you to catch the train to Luzern. The train leaving at 12:11 from Munich to Zurich looks realistic.
Also consider that there are 5 direct flights to Zurich from Munich that only take 50 minutes.
Hi, Alicia. I looked at your other posts. It looks like you are maybe planning a Munich - Lucerne - Salzburg - Munich trip?????
I imagine you have already bought your flight tickets for the current trip. If not, this advice will help you squeeze a few more hours out of your trip; if so, maybe it will help for the next trip to Europe.
If you use the "Multi-City" function on the search page for most airlines, you can usually get an "open jaw" itinerary (e.g., land in Zurich and fly out of Munich) for a similar price to a round-trip itinerary in and out of the same city (though that's not always true, particularly if a certain city is on sale). It would have worked well for this trip because you would have a 1-hour train ride from the Zurich airport to Lucerne, instead of a 5+-hour train ride from Munich.
Regardless, you're going to see some awesome places on your trip. Enjoy it!
Thanks for the advice. And yes, we did look into a multi-city option. However we had some miles to use, and I couldn't find that option in this instance. We decided even tho it was a long train ride, we didn't want to miss the opportunity to see Switzerland. And we are thinking the train ride will give us some beautiful views too! :)
