Train Garmisch to Munich

Thank you in advance for your help.

We will be staying in Garmisch in mid-June and wondering what the best option will be to get to Munich for a day trip. If I was leaving tomorrow, there are trips with one stop taking just over an hour, but if I look out further to our date, it appears that every trip takes at least two stops and around 2 hours. Return tickets also appear to be 2 transfers and 2 hours. Will shorter routes be added as we get closer to my date?

As far as this one day trip is involved, is it the best bet to pick up the one-day Bavaria (Bayern) ticket (so long as we depart after 9:00 on a week day)?

If it does end up being 4 hours round trip, can somoene sell me on taking the train over driving? (We have a rental car, but would prefer to take the train).

Thank you!

What website are you using? The Bahn shows a regional connection from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Munich Hbf nearly every hour. Most times the trip takes 1H20 and has no train changes.

It looks like from the 12th of June until the 13th of July, there will be work going on on the tracks, and they will bus you from Weilheim to Tutzing. The detour will add about 40 minutes to the connection.

Will shorter routes be added as we get closer to my date?

I doubt that they will change the schedule as you get closer to you date.

Your best ticket for this trip is the Werdenfels Ticket (33€ for two people) and it includes use of the S-Bahn in Munich, same as the Bayern-Ticket.

It is a Regio Werdenfels ticket, so you can leave anytime in the morning and return anytime in the afternoon or evening. Cost is 33 EUR for 2 people total.

I sincerely appreciate the help, but I'm more confused now that I had been.

The linked DB website doesn't allow me to enter Garmisch as a location, although I have found it on the DB app. The app shows me the same times I was seeing on other sites (Rail Europe, Trainline, Virail - what I was able to find via google - I'll stick to DB from now on).

If I want to head out in the morning (say 6/21), the options are 8:07 to 10:01 or 9:06 to 11:00. It just seems that I could make much better time by driving.

For the Bavaria daily ticket, if I'm seeing correctly, the 8:07 wouldn't be an option since it departs prior to 9:00. The hours appear to be 9:00 am to 3:00 am the following day.

Thanks again.

I see your issue now. On 6/21, there is scheduled engineering work on that line, and there is a replacement bus around the closed section of track between Weilheim and Tutzing. This adds 30 minutes to the travel time.

The Regio Werdenfels Ticket allows you to leave earlier than the Bayern Ticket, which is restricted to after 9 am on week days and is 3 EUR more expensive than the Regio Ticket. On the downside, the Regio Ticket does not include local transport in Munich like the Bayern Ticket. You could buy a Group "M" ticket for unlimited transport for up to 5 people in the city of Munich for 17 EUR. If you do drive, you would need this anyway, plus the parking fee.

Why not? I have no problem entering "Garmisch" as a location. I think it defaults to Garmisch-Partenkirchen Haubtbahnhof or Post Bahnhof Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but it gets me there.

Thank you all again for your help. Now that I know the DB website is the way to go, I have familiarized myself with it. Not sure why I wasn't getting GP to show up as an option earlier other than it wasn't showing up as a drop-down item, but when I just hit search it pops up.

Last question - given that it is around 2 hours each way via train (plus my 15 minutes of walking to get to the train station in GP), does it make sense to drive either to Munich or part-way to avoid the transfer? Other than driving directly to Munich (not sure about where I would park), I haven't been able to find some combo of driving part way and taking the train the rest of the way that really saves me any time.

It's just going to be a long day and train/bus/train could be confusing.

Thx!

Look at a map and it looks like the A95 autobahn just whizzes up to Munich and so simple.

My experience is that the A95 is a very busy motorway and I have been stuck in traffic, and as the Autobahn ends (approaching G-P, which will be you on the way back) traffic really backs up as you join the B2.

Driving in Munich is a real bear, and parking is worse.

If you decide to do the driving, you would be advised to use one of the stations after the train detour and park there. Parking may still be available by the time you arrive.

One last thing - drink driving is strictly enforced in Bavaria so trips to Biergartens and other beer vendors - part of the fun of Munich - will need modification....

oh, and this is a German rental? If not you mustn't drive into the green environment (Umweltzone) zone without a window sticker.

Not really confusing. When they close sections of track for rebuilding, the replacement buses are lined up waiting where the train stops, everybody gets off the train and onto the buses. They drive around the construction to the waiting train on the other side, everybody gets off the buses and onto the train and continue on. I've done it, and it is as smooth as can be under the circumstances. Since you are day-tripping, at least you don't have luggage to manage.

I checked the schedules and the construction project lasts from June 12 to July 13, so its a major bit of work. You can avoid the the replacement bus by changing trains at Weilheim to a train to Geltendorf, then change there to a train to Munich Hbf, but that takes longer than using the replacement buses.

I'd drive to Wolfratshausen, which is near the Garmisch-Munich autobahn (exit Wolfratshausen), and has a s-Bahn connection every 20 min. into Munich. You'd need a group day ticket (fare zone M-3; €22.40, up to 5 travellers).
