In late May we will be traveling with our grandkids (age 13 & 15) from Salzburg, Austria to Heidelberg, Germany thru Munich. Would we have time to stop in Munich for a few hours; store luggage at the train station, visit the Dachau Concentration Camp for 1-2 hours; then take a later train on to Heidelberg? Would we take a bus, subway or train to Dachau? Thanks in advance.
You can store luggage in lockers at the Munich Hbf. The lockers are right off the end of track 26, next to the entrance to the S-Bahn station.
Puchase a Munich XXL Partner Tageskarte (day ticket for up to 5 people in the inner two zones of Munich) for 14,20€. Take the S2, Richtung (direction) Petershausen, to the Dachau station (next station after Karlsfeld, not Dachau Stadt), then take bus 728 to the Memorial. The bus stop to the memorial is in front of the station and well marked. Both the S-Bahn and the bus run every 20 min. Total time one way between the Hbf and the Memorial is about 40 min. The Tageskarte will cover both the S-Bahn and the bus, round trip.
The English guided tours are every day at 1100 and 1300; you might want to schedule the train accordingly. The cost of the guided tour is 3,00€; it takes about 2½ hours. Auto guides are available for the same price and take about the same amount of time. If you only want to go in and look around on your own, admission is free.
It looks like there are EuroCity (EC) connections through Munich between Salzburg and Heidelberg every 2 hours so a four hour stopover would give you between 1 and 2 hours at the memorial.
WOW! Thanks so much.
