Train from Prague to Belgium

We will be taking the train from Prague to Brussels, then on to Bruges or Ghent. While the €139 fare is attractive, the 9:43 am to 9:35 pm to Brussels, even with two 50 minutes connections (Regansburg and Frankfurt) is probably enough to make Barley start behaving badly. So looking at potential stops for a night before continuing jouney to Belgium. Unless things changed since 1983, I would avoid Frankfurt near the train station.

But thinking Nürnburg or Wurzburg would be good 1/2 way overnight stops. Which town would be best for a quick and convenient overnight stay, Arrival in Nürnburg would be 3:28 pm or Wurzburg at 4:22. It’s light until 9:30 pm in July so gives us 5-6 hours of daylight.

Which town would you suggest? Or other ideas along that route? Any recommended hotels? Any one must see the afternoon we arrive or before we depart in the morning (9:30 Nürnburg or 10:24 Würzburg?

One more question. It appears the tickets for July 5-6 are purchasable on the DB site. But how soon should I book to get the lowest rates. Now? Or can I wait a month or two. Today’s DB Fare with the overnight in either of those towns are:

€66 Prague to Nürenburg

€79.8 Prague to Würzburg

€99.80 from either Town to Brussels.

Thanks again

Lv prague 9:43 on 7/5 for w'burg; lv W'burg 10:24 on 7/6 for brussels. Pay 79.80 Euros for two adults on one Prague - Brussels ticket. To get this schedule and fare just enter an 18-hr. stopover in W'burg when you do your search. Try it for Nuremberg if you want to stay there instead.

I suggest you buy any available tickets NOW if you can commit. All prices you see will rise as tickets sell.

Russ,
do I book on the DB website?
Thanks didn’t know about the +18 hour changeover.

We are good to commit for this leg of our travels.

Looks like the DB app only gives option for 45 minute connection time. I’ll try on web site, which us how I need to buy Barley’s ticket.

Russ, FINALLy, I was able to duplicate the €79.80 fair for two people on the DB site with 18 hour stop in Nürnberg. Arrive in Brussels at 5:35 the next day, with daylight time to catch train the Bruges or Ghent.
Perfect connection times! Are seats reserved or is that extra?

Now I just need to figure out the exact day to leave Prague so I can book.

Thank you! What would I do without the collective knowledge of the forum?

If you are catching additional trains to Gent or Bruges then try using THOSE cities as your final destinations.

FWIW I like Nuremberg somewhat more than Würzburg. You probably want to stay near the station for "quick and convenient." The castle and the core old town are a bit of a walk from there but it's a mostly traffic-free walk. Use the steps/escalators from the front of the station to pass under the big boulevard out front to the pedestrian zone on the other side. You'll find the Craftsmen's Courtyard there - then comes the longer walk in the direction of the castle. The Barfüsser is one of numerous pubs in the old town... it's just a short walk beyond the courtyard (see map and descriptions at page below.)
