Train from Munich to Stuttgart

We are flying into Munich and will be leaving right after landing to go to Stuttgart for a couple of days (coming back to Munich later in the trip). We will need to take public transport (no car). I've done some initial searching and it appears you can't go directly from the Munich airport by train to Stuttgart but rather would take the S-bahn to Münich Hauptbahnhof and then an ICE train from there to Stuttgart. Is that the right plan or am I missing something?

Thanks for any insights you can share!

Yes, that is correct. Either the S1 or S8 (which ever comes first) to the Hauptbahnhof. Then the next ICE train to Stuttgart. Its usually not recommended to buy the tickets in advance in case of flight delays. However, if you choose to do that for cost savings, allow several hours between your ETA and your departure from the Hauptbahnhof.

The previous post refers to the popular advance-purchase "saver fare" tickets which may cost very little if bought well in advance - but which would be useless if you missed your scheduled train since they are train-specific fares and are largely non-refundable.

The "Flex" fares can be used on any journey at any hour from MUC airport > Stuttgart on whatever date you specify. You can buy them in advance or at the airport station, and the price will be the same... not as cheap as the saver fares, but refundable.

Whether saver or flex, your S-Bahn trip will be included on the same ticket as your ICE. Just specify your "from" station as Munich Airport.
