Train from Munich to Salzburg round trip

Hello,
My wife and I want to take a train on Monday Feb 29 at 6:50 am from Munich to Salzburg which I have seen prices for $40 total on DB Bahn web site. The trip takes 2hr 15min. The question I have is "I have heard that you can get a ticket for the day or one way? from Bayern-ticket for $23 1person + $5 2nd person = $28 one way trip, but the hours of use are between 9am -3am the next day." Is this correct? The Bayern-ticket could not be used for the first leg to Salzburg but hoping I could use that ticket for the return only. Any suggestion?

Yes, the Bayern Ticket has time restrictions for weekdays. Typically if you're leaving earlier than 9:00 am you would just buy a regular ticket from Munich to the destination where your train will be at 9:00 am. Then from that point the Bayern ticket will work for you. Yes, it also works on the return from Salzburg. You can buy the Bayern ticket before you leave Munich.

Too bad you have to leave at such an early hour.

Germany and Austria use euro (€), not dollars ($).

I don't see any 6:50 train leaving the Hbf for Salzburg on Feb 29. I do see a 6:20 RailJet (RJ). Is that the train to which you are referring? It only takes 1hr 38min; I don't see any train connections from Munich to Salzburg taking 2hr 15min. You can get advance purchase tickets for the RailJet for 19€ each, or 38€ fpr both of you.

But, as far as the Bayern-Ticket is concerned, yes, you can use it for the trip back to Munich, on a regional train. You can buy it from an automat in Munich before you leave. When I was in Salzburg in 2012, the Austrian Rail automats were also selling Bayern-Tickets.

If you went one day earlier, on Sunday the 28th, you could use the Bayern-Ticket at any time after midnight, so you could go on the 6:44 Meridian (takes 1hr 57min) and come home on another regional train that evening, all with the same 28€ Bayern-Ticket.

Note that you cannot use a Bayern Ticket on Railjet services, but you can on RegioExpress or Meridian trains that are almost as fast.

Phillip, the reasons I mentioned the RJ are 1) it leaves at 6:20 (around 6:50), and 2) a Savings Fare ticket could be as low as 38€ for two (almost 40€). The fare for the Meridian train at 6:44 would be over 60€ for 2 (full fare, it's too early to use a Bayern-Ticket).

But, speaking of Meridian, that company sells a ticket, das Guten Tag Ticket, similar to the Bayern-Ticket, for 2€ less (21€ plus 5€). The main difference between the two tickets is that he can only use das Guten Tag Ticket on Meridian trains. He can't use it for other transport in the MVV when he gets back to Munich (it can't even be used for the S-Bahn).
