train from Mainz to St. Goar and back

Wednesday we will be taking (Oct. 23) the train to St. Goar, then go from St. Goar to Rudeshheim, then take the train back
to Mainz by 17:30.
1. Which train do we take from Mainz to St. Goar? (a direct train would be best if possible)
2. Which stop do we get off when we reach st. Goar to see the castle and enjoy the city?
3. Which train do we take from St. Goar to Rudesheim?
4. Which train do we take from Rudesheim back to Mainz, the Hyatt Regency closest stop?
5. Is there a cruise on the river from one of these places that would be the most enjoyable?

Thank you. II am struggling with which train to take.

  1. The RB 26 line goes hourly at minue 3 past the hor from Mainz toward Cologne and stops after 57 minutes in St. Goar:

  2. St Goar has just one station.

  3. You can either (a) go back to "Bingen Stadt" and walk 500 meters to the Rhine ferry to Rüdesheim, or (b) take the ferry from St. Goar to St. Goarshausen and use from there the train to Rüdesheim (it's also a 500m walk from the dock to the station), or (c) travel from St Goar north to Koblenz and transfer there to the right bank line to Rüdesheim.

  4. Take any train to Wiesbaden and switch there to the S6 or S8 to Mainz.

  5. At this time of the year I'm afraid there is only the Bingen-Rüdesheimer company that is still operating. Time tables for their mini cruises can be found here: https://www.bingen-ruedesheimer.de/fahrplan/. I'd decide first on this because it will determine the rest of your day planning.

For all train connections, please download the DB navigator for the latest news. There is much trackwork going on presently on the left bank line and not every scheduled train may actually run (or could be replaced by a bus).
