Ask the man in seat 61 he knows all.

You can also use a website only for research and then shop for price. Trainline for example.

The German rail company is Deutche Bahn. Go to https://int.bahn.de/en for schedules and prices. Generally, the fastest, direct trains will be more expensive than the slower trains that require multiple connections.

I’d go by plane

By the time you've traveled to the airport, arrived 2 hours before your flight, flown, then deplaned and taken the train into A'dam, you could have arrived by train. In more comfort. Without the hassle.

Train wins over plane easily, for such a short trip.
Get your ticket on Deutsche Bahn.

possibly looking to fly into Frankfurt and take speed train to Amsterdam
( from another post by OP)

If OP is already at the airport, flying may not be a bad choice; doing it as a separate ticket does pose some risk.

The question really is, how much cheaper is it to fly to Frankfurt and then spend the time and money to get to Amsterdam, vs just flying to Amsterdam? Don't forget, your time has value.

I would fly, and I have. You don't need to get there two hours early, it's a local flight. 65 minutes in an airplane beats 4 hours on a train every time. And flying is cheaper.

Download the DB app. Very easy to book from here. Assuming you are departing from the Frankfurt airport, the fastest route requires no transfers and terminates at the central station. It's under 4 hours travel time. The leg to Cologne is very fast. It's slower going from there but is not an unpleasant trip. My unofficial rule is if it's around 4 hours or less, the train experience beats the plane even if a tad longer. Pros include not waiting around in an airport, typically terminates where you want to be instead of having to taxi from the airport, more comfortable.

after having gone in the opposite direction last year with endless delays and packed trains I would recommend flying. That’s what I plan to do on my upcoming trip this year, land in Amsterdam, then connecting flight to Frankfurt.

So have decided to go by train vs flying. Just want to make sure I am reading the info correctly. Says from Frankfurt Flughafen Fernbf to Amsterdam Centraal is 3:41 min with 7 stops?? That is supposedly direct? lol Is this the correct station leaving from Frankfurt airport? I understand there are two stations there so want to make sure in correct station. thanks

"Frankfurt Flughafen Fernbf to Amsterdam Centraal is 3:41 min with 7 stops??"

No date? No departure time? Travel time varies depending on these factors. Anyway, I checked a RANDOM date and found direct journeys at 9:41, 11:41, 13:41, 15:41, and 17:41, each one taking 3:48 and making 6 stops on the way.

Another piece of information that matters is unknown - what time does your flight arrive, in theory? I saw saver fare (train-specific) prices at about €80 for my random date. I saw flex-fare prices at €150. So if your flight is scheduled for, let's say 8:30 am, arrival at FRA, the cheaper saver-fare ticket for the 9:41 train would probably be no good since it is train-specific and you have a good chance at missing that train because of security, baggage, etc. The cheaper ticket for 11:41 would probably work for you - but there's still a chance of forfeiting the ticket if your flight ended up arriving really late (which sometimes happens) and/or if there are problems getting through security, baggage, etc.

If you just want to get on the train and go at any hour, you need the flex-fare ticket. This ticket can be bought at the airport once you arrive or in advance - the price is the same either way.

You can of course pretty much guarantee the validity of a saver fare ticket with an extra-large time-window - or with a ticket that leaves FRA the following morning (in other words, by staying overnight nearby somewhere.)

A final option would be to check with your airline to see if a "rail and fly" flex-fare is available from the airline. Some airlines sell this flex-fare ticket at a discount.

The Ferhbahnhof is the station with distance train departures. The other station handles local trains. And yes that train is direct, and it is not a joke. Don't confuse direct with non stop. Direct just means you dont have to change trains en route. Long distance routes that are non stop are uncommon in Europe.

Thanks so much for your help! Our flt from US arrives at 10:45am so figured 1:48 train would probably work 🤞🏻. On 5/21/2026 says $86
