Train from Cologne to Remagen and south

We are doing the RS Germany in 13 days tour this September. We are considering leaving the tour in Cologne and taking a train from there to Remagen. My father was injured at Remagen March 10, 1945 and so I want to visit there. Then, later that same day take the train south to meet back up with the tour.
Any thoughts or suggestions on my proposed itinerary? And, is the DB website best place to get train tickets for these 2 one way trips?

If this is what you want to do there is no reason not to do it. And yes, train tickets you can buy on the DB website, which is the official one-stop-shop for all train travel in Germany.

Note that the train from Cologne to Remagen is a regional train, so you can't even buy tickets far in advance. Just buy that ticket locally.

Where are you meeting up with the tour?

sounds like a great idea, if I was on that tour I'd rather come with you than go to Cologne cathedral!

No need to buy tickets in advance, get them from a machine at the station, they work in english. The trains are easy, make sure you know where you are meeting back with the tour. But you can check schedules at www.bahn.com - make sure you change the date to your travel in September, if you leave it as today it will find alterations due to trackwork. Looks like you are going to Sankt Goar, it's 61 minutes from Remagen, direct train every hour.

PS sit on the left for the river views

Edit: just had a thought. Assuming that you will be leaving Cologne after 09:00 and there are two of you, the cheapest train ticket seems to be ONE "Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket" (QdL) bought for 2 people at €63 inclusive. This is actually a day ticket covering all regional trains in Germany so you can visit Remagen and if running ahead of the tour, somewehere else as well before reaching Sankt Goar. This may be listed in the "Offers" section on the ticket machine

You'll of course visit the "Peace Museum" there, right? There are no luggage lockers at Remagen station, so as long as you are bag-free - and can arrange for your bags to travel to St Goar independently - this plan should work fine. If you cannot do that, it gets trickier unless you can comfortably port your bags around with you in town and to the museum, which lies south of town.

Since the TI office in Remagen is just a couple of blocks from the station entrance, you might be able to drop bags there. Many TI's in Germany offer this service. You can check with them in advance to confirm this option on the date in question and for the hours you have in mind:

Thanks Russ! Had not given much thought about luggage. We won’t have much, but it would be much easier not dragging it around.
May check with our tour guide to see if we can put it on the bus first thing and just go with our day bags.
