flying Delta from Detroit to FRA in late November. Our flight is scheduled to land at 7:50 am.
I think we should arrive in terminal 2 ? Goal is to take train to Regensberg that morning. While i would like to purchase train tickets in advance....i don't think its wise? thoughts please!
There is a direct ICE train at 10:01 and the Flexpreis fare is 76.40 EUR. Nonrefundable Sparpreis fares only save you about 25 EUR, so not worth the worry IMO. Just buy when you arrive. You could buy a seat reservation for that train now as that only costs 4.90 EUR.
thank you Sam. Im buying a second ticket for a friend also.( so I don't want to mess up!). Specifically looking at the November 30 trains. the train specific at 10;01 appears to be 87 euros total for two and double for the flex. Am I understanding that you can book a seat only for that train? Additionally, should I expect if i don't buy now, price on the day of travel at counter go up significantly? As well as a long time consuming line? Thank you so much! P.S. researching online it doesn't look like a long walk between terminal 2 and 1..... we will have only carry on thanks! JT
When we were in Germany last year, we bought our train tickets from the DB Navigator app, ( set up an account), and it was easy. Just do it as you're standing in line at passport control, or waiting for luggage. There was also a nice senior discount, if that applies.
Have a great trip.
The Flexpreis is the maximum price the ticket will be. Tickets do not include seat reservations, which would be wise to have. The same train for next Thursday is showing high demand expected. The train continues to Vienna. Otherwise you could risk having to stand for at least a portion of the trip. When you buy a seat reservation in advance, your seat is guaranteed on that particular train. If you missed it, you are only out the reservation fee (4.90 EUR pp).
Whether or not you want to buy Super Sparpreis tickets, I leave to your gamblers instinct. Planes do get delayed, sometimes by a lot, or even cancelled.
I always buy train tickets in advance for the least expensive price and prefer first class just for that little bit of extra room. I give myself a 4 hour cushion. Yes, you will arrive at Terminal 2 and need to go to Terminal 1 for the train.
You can always buy on the DB app so you don’t have to wait on any line.
If you wait till day of to buy train tickets, you will pay exorbitantly.
Too bad you already booked you flight on Delta. Lufthansa, United, and American (but not Delta) airlines all participate in DBs Rail&Fly program. For 30€ (at least on Lufthansa) you can get a "flight coupon" with your airline ticket that allows you to take any train (including ICEs) from your arrival airport to any rail station in Germany. The ticket is valid on any train on the day of arrival or the following day, and is not subject to the train specific requirement of Saver Fares.
Here is the information from Lufthansa's website.
Or, had you booked your flight to Munich (I see Delta doesn't fly non-stop to Munich), it's only an 82 minute trip by direct regional train (you can use a 27€ Bayern-Ticket). Regional trains to Regensburg now leave from the same airport station as the S-Bahn into Munich.
If you wait till day of to buy train tickets, you will pay exorbitantly.
It has already been established that the Flexpreis is 86.80 EUR per person, hardly exorbitant. If you want book the 12:01 train, to give yourself some cushion, and you land on time, then you are waiting around lovely Frankfurt airport for an extra 2 hours. Not fun (been there, done that). Its the old time-money trade off.
Thank you everyone! I downloaded the app, bought the flex tics and got seat reservations for the 10:00. Fingers crossed!
I give myself a 4 hour cushion.
If you've got 4 hours to spare, go by regional train to Regensburg. It will only take 2½ hrs more than the ICE, so you'll still save 1½ hours, and you can use a Bayern-Ticket (shared with your friend, it's only 18€ each). You can only use the Bayern-Ticket for travel from Kahl to Regensburg, so you'll also need to purchase a local, RMV ticket from the airport to Kahl for 9,75€ each. That's less than 28€ each. The BEST Sparpreis ticket I could find for late November was 40€; most days were more.
BTW, I once bought a ticket to Munich, and THEN started looking at arrival times for my flight. In the first week after I bought the ticket, that flight was 10 hours late arriving in Munich on day. Fortunately, when I flew it, it was on time.
Two things to know about the "Flexpreis".
a) this is the "walk up fare". It is what you pay at the station
b) it is fully flexible. You can use this ticket on any train on the route you bought it for, without having to do anything special.
So you can buy the Flexpreis in advance. As long as you buy it for the right route and day you are set. Saves you having to deal with a ticket office or ticket machine. With a Flexpreis you just hop on whatever train is the first one to leave in your direction after you have reached the station.
If you buy the "Rail&Fly" add on to your ticket (contact the airline to do this for you as this is a great deal) you basically have a Flexpreis ticket to anywhere in Germany.
a) this is the "walk up fare". It is what you pay at the station
And it is always the same fare, from the time the tickets go on sale until the train leaves the station. The fare does not increase or decrease as train time approaches.
b) it is fully flexible. You can use this ticket on any train on the
route you bought it for
Not exactly true. You can use it for any equivalent train on the route. You cannot purchase a flexi ticket for a regional train and use it on a long distance train, and you cannot purchase a ticket for an IC or EC and use it on an ICE (however you can use an ICE ticket on an IC).
