Train Fares Germany

Hi there,

Myself and a friend are arriving into Berlin in a few weeks (a Friday) and need to get to Hamburg and want to get the train. When trying to book a ticket, I note that unless it want to pay for a flexi pass, you are reserved onto the specific train you book.

Given delays to our flight are possible, we don't want to pay for a train in advance, only to miss it.

Does anyone know how much a ticket would be (one way) for a youth (25) and an adult from Berlin to Hamburg, if we purchased them on the day of travel?

Many thanks!

The flexpreis is basically the walk up price. 97.80 EUR now from BER.

I'm finding some lower prices than that, but not by much. What time does your flight get in?

You really only have a couple of options. One is to buy a non-cancellable (and therefore cheaper) ticket for around €29-37 or so, and risk not being able to use it. The other is to purchase a ticket once you get there, which will approximately triple the cost.

You could also spend the night in Berlin and head out the next morning. There is a Motel One about a block from the Berlin Hbf that is relatively inexpensive. That would give you a chance to kick off some of the jet lag you will undoubtedly experience. But of course, that's an additional cost.

The flexpreis varies according to day of the week. I am seeing 89.50 EUR on Wednesday, Feb 14, and 103.40 on Friday, Feb 16.

Looks like for a flexi-fare Friday is the most expensive day and Saturday is the least expensive. Saving Fare ticket prices depend on demand, i.e., as lower tier tickets sell out, the price goes up.
