Train assistance Munich airport to Nuremberg

I am scheduled to arrive from the US on Dec 10th at 7:40 and then looking to take a train to Nuremberg. I will not be checking a bag but do not know how long it will take me to get thru customs and also if flight will be on time..In looking at the Dbahn site I see that the combination of S/ICE trains run about every 20 minutes (8:24,9:04,9:24 etc) and then regional trains at 9:08 and again at  11:08.I don't think that I want to buy the tickets in advance as I understand that the ICE tickets are train specific. But have also heard ICE tickets are a good bit  more expensive buying same day.. Any guidance please??

Have you looked at the cost of a ticket for a train tomorrow or the next day? That will give you an idea of any cost savings. Note that the regional train at 09:08 will be the same price, and is direct. Since it is a regional train, no advance ticket is necessary.

Since, as you’ve written, you don’t know precisely when your flight will arrive at Munich and you also don’t know how long it will take to clear Passport control, there’s no way of knowing which train you’ll first be able to catch.

The least expensive tickets now available for December run about $30. Last-minute tickets for tomorrow’s trains cost from $50-$60. Since that is not a huge difference— you may as well wait to buy your ticket after you arrive in Munich.

Thank you to both for your responses.. looks like the best will be an upon arrival purchase.. Will use either the app or kiosk at the airport..

I have done both purchase ahead and same day for trains out of Frankfurt airport. I have found same day is best for me. No worrying that I am going to make my train and no sitting around waiting for my train.

No, that's true only for saver fare tickets. Walk up fares are fully flexible. The same holds for regional train tickets, e.g. for the UFEX frrom MUC via Regensburg to Nürnberg. Using that train with a Bayern ticket costs about as much as an average saver fare ticket for the ICE; however, the triptakes half an hour longer.

BTW, there are more connections via Regensburg if you are ready to transfer there. And there is also an hourly connection via Munich Hbf with the semi-fast MNX (München-Nürnberg-Express).

There are basically two ways to get from MUC to Nürnberg. You can either go into the Münich Hbf by S-Bahn and from there catch a long distance train (ICE) to Nürnberg, or you can take a regional train to Nürnberg from the station at the airport. The times are similar. It might take a half hour longer to use the regional train from the airport v. the ICE.

But the cost are not similar. The cost of a fully flexible ICE ticket is easily twice the cost of using the regional trains and a Bayern-Ticket. And, although it is still more, the cost of a risky Saving Fare ticket is still a little more than a Bayern-Ticket. As far as I am concerned, there is no question, take the regional train from the airport.
