Train advice AMS-Berlin

I am finding that a german train pass
of 3 days is just enough for me
but need to get from Amsterdam to Berlin

Does it work to buy a ticket from Amsterdam to border
of Germany ( not sure where that is on Berlin run?)
and then use german rail pass
for last segment.

Can u stay on same train doing this?
Do you activate German Rail pass at border
or at Amsterdam?
Thanks for advice

Do you activate German Rail pass at border
or at Amsterdam?

Quoting from the German Rail Pass web site:

If you arrive in Germany on a train from abroad, a ticket inspector on the train can also validate your pass.

Fastest connections are via Hannover, so probably your border station is Bad Bentheim.

For a train ride Amsterdam - Berlin and a few days in B you do not need a rail pass for 3 days.

Amsterdam to Bad Bentheim on the international train to Berlin costs you EUR 19,90, while the whole journey - bought in advance - isn't more expensive than EUR 39,90. It is maybe better to buy a 2-day German pass (if available). You can buy those discounted tickets on the website of NS International or the Bahn.

my trip

fly in ams 3 nights then
train to berlin 4 nights
then to nurnberg 1 night
then to munich 3 nights
and salzburg 4 nights
back to munich 1 night fly out

i think the bayern pass best around munich and to and from salzburg

so that leaves 3 train trips

1 ams-berlin
2 berlin-nurnberg
3 nurnberg-munich

shortest german train pass is 3 days

(3) is also Bavaria ticket.
(1) & (2): look for saver fares (fixed train) or even Super Saver.

Be aware that local public transport tickets in Berlin and Munich must be validated / time-stamped.

3 nurnberg-munich

A pre booked ICE saver fare ticket for that connection is usually €19.90, so probably cheaper than a day of your pass.

The shortest German Rail pass also costs €190 if I'm not mistaken. I very much doubt that it will be cheaper than three single tickets bought in advance.

Berlin and Leipzig are not located in Bavaria. Saver tickets make most sense.

As said: just book normal tickets for Berlin-Leipzig and Leipzig Nuremberg.

If you have a German Rail Pass of course you can use it for these distances but it is more expensive - only reason would be more flexibility if you want to keep exact date & time open.
