Town To Stay Outside of Munich

Have discovered there will be a large international convention in Munich this April when we will have a day or two during our trip to Germany to visit Munich. Hotels/Airbnbs etc. have extremely high prices - I've seen an Airbnb at $1,400/night.

My question is, what are good outlying towns to stay in the area to make a day trip or two into Munich. I'd prefer to travel by train into the city and having a regular route to/from would be important as well as service times through the evening. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Consider staying in Augsburg, which is 50 miles west of Munich, but they have trains to Munich about every half hour. Also, Augsburg is worth a visit.

Is that during the Bauer Fair - the 8th to the 14th? Or are you conflicting with the earlier fairs?

The BAU Fair (international architecture).

I'd say Augsburg also. Old Augsburg (the inner city) is really underappreciated by tourists. It's also just a short walk from the main train station so you could easily stay there and catch a ride into Munich.

yup, my favourite is sold out too for that fair.

Have you tried somewhere a little less convenient for convention goers yet very scenic for visitors? Maybe Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Bad Tölz or somewhere on the Kochel am See line?

I'm considering Dachau because my flight from the USA arrives late afternoon and I don't want to drive very far. Plus, I want to see the Dachau memorial before heading out on my road trip the following day. Dachau looks to be a pleasant place, with a scenic old town center, to spend a night or two.

I’d second Nigel’s recommendation of the areas south of Munich. Check out areas served by the Bayrische Oberlandbahn. My preference in a situation like yours would be to stay in Tegernsee area.

We stayed at Hotel Burgmeier when we stayed in Dachau a few years ago. Very nice hotel. It’s a couple miles from the concentration camp, main town, and train station. We had a car so taking the train into Munich was easy.

Thanks for all the replies. Have found a spot in Gauting that will fit our needs.

That's great - and only a handful of stops to the centre of town.... congratulations. And it has park and ride too, if your hotel is too far to walk....

and on the S-Bahn, not even the BoB.
