"Tourist dies after attack at Neuschwanstein Castle

After a man attacked two women near Neuschwanstein Castle, one of the two women has died. The 21-year-old woman, who was attacked by a 30-year-old man at Marienbrücke near Neuschwanstein Castle on Wednesday, succumbed to her serious injuries in a hospital. The second woman is seriously injured. The spokesman for the Kempten public prosecutor's office, Thomas Hörmann, told BR. Previously, several media had reported.
Both women sexually attacked

The two 21- and 22-year-old female tourists were walking on the Marienbrücke when they encountered the 30-year-old, a U.S. tourist. He then apparently lured the two onto a trail leading to a lookout point and "sexually assaulted the 21-year-old woman," the prosecutor said. When the 22-year-old intervened, he strangled her and threw her 50 meters down into the Pöllat gorge. There she remained severely injured. He then also strangled the 21-year-old and also pushed her into the gorge.

The Füssen mountain rescue service recovered the two injured people. The 22-year-old was brought to a hospital injured but responsive. The 21-year-old was seriously injured and taken by helicopter to the hospital, where she died the following night as a result of her injuries. The public prosecutor did not want to give further details on the course of events or on the perpetrator and victim.

Arrest after large-scale operation

A large-scale police operation took place on Wednesday afternoon behind the Marienbrücke. Thanks to 25 emergency vehicles and two helicopters, the 30-year-old could be arrested shortly after the arrival of the police near the crime scene. The suspect was then initially taken to the Füssen police station.

The historic Marienbrücke is a popular meeting place for tourists because there is a good view of the castle from there. Neuschwanstein Castle in Schwangau is one of the most famous and most visited sights in Germany."

I hope the man that did this is prosecuted to the fullest, and even then that isn't enough.

How horrible and sad! And I agree with mikliz97 and hope he goes to prison for a very very long time.

Horribly saddened to read this! Such a fairy tale idyllic spot! Been there. One does not picture evil like this lurking! Oh those poor girls and their families experiencing such tramatic grief! Glad to hear he is caught and locked up forever please! All we can do is look out for each other and in kindness!

How horrible.

The Washington Post is reporting that the both of the tourist and the attacker were from the U.S. I’ve gifted this article. Hopefully you won’t encounter the paywall:

How heartbreaking! I was there this time last year and explored all around the gorge and trails. This is so sad and terrifying.

So horrible. Happens here all the time but we don’t expect it to happen in Germany. How horrible and sad for these young women and their families. My very little understanding of German justice is they’re more lenient than the US. But yes, i hope he’s locked up for life.

What a horrid tragedy. I hope the survivor can heal, both mentally and physically. And, hope the perpetrator doesn't breathe a free breath for a very, very long time.

Will a U.S. citizen who killed an U.S. citizens in Germany then sit in a German prison? I lack (thank God) any experience here.

I assumed he’d be tried and imprisoned where he committed the crime, but i could be wrong.

A person that commits a crime in Germany and gets sent to prison will spend that time in a German prison. Citizenship has nothing to do with it, it's the location of the crime that matters.

But as a US citizen he can apply to be transfered to a US prison. There is probably a treaty between Germany and the US that regulates how that works.

Actually, a US citizen cannot apply for extradition to the US. Extradition is possible based on a term called extraterritorial jurisdiction, but the request can only be made by the relevant government entities. And there would have to be a pretty good reason for doing so; usually relating to a national interest, such as when the suspect has committed crimes in both countries. I do not see how the US would find a national interest in extraditing a murder suspect who committed the crime in a different country, even if the victims were American.

Also, logistically it would be very difficult for the US to accept extraterritorial jurisdiction, since all the evidence and most of the witnesses are in Germany. If Germany extradited this man to the US, in order for the US to successfully prosecute him, there would need to be a full trial. A trial that uses physical evidence and witnesses, which means having police, medical teams, witnesses and so on come to the US. Certainly interpreters would be need and the expense of bringing them to the states would be astronomical. I just do not see that happening.

In case anyone is interested, here is a link that shows what the US can do if a citizen is arrested in Germany. https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/emergencies/arrest-detention.html

I'm not 100% sure about the legal terms in English. But what you are talking about is a suspect wanted by country A arrested by the police in country B and sent to country A for trial.

What I refered to is that if a citizen of country A gets sent to prison in country B, they can usually request to serve (part of) their sentence in country A. At least if there is a treaty between the countries on the issue. I don't know if there is a treaty in this case but most western countries have treaties with each other on the issue so I guess so.

Extraterritorial jurisdiction is something completely different.

He’d be a fool to want to transfer to a US prison. 60 Minutes did a story on the German Penal System and their prisons are far more humane and lenient than ours. I’m only going by the 60 Minutes story, i am no expert. Others here may have more insight.

Nick, thanks for the clarification. I see now what Badger was saying. Yes, there is a transfer process, but as Susan mentioned, the suspect would be a fool to request a transfer to the US, as almost assuredly he would have extra time tacked onto his sentence. And of course the US prisons are not the most humane places. I would imagine he will stay in Germany and wait to be released.

This is terrible for the surviving victim, and the murdered victim and her family. It’s ironic that murderer/rapists can be exempt from 90-day Schengen rules, staying for much longer, albeit in prison!

I saw this story in the news yesterday and was deeply saddened at the tragedy of this senseless act. My thoughts are with the victims and their families.
