Being a senior traveling alone to Berlin, will need good local tour operators or tour guides. Can anybody recommend some? Thanks, Ioana
Hi Rateshi,
I like Original Berlin Walks, who offer quite a few different walking tours. I've done their "Discover Berlin" (good introduction to the city) their "Third Reich" and "Cold War Berlin" tours. Check out their website for details and other options: www.berlinwalks.de
www.berlinwalks.de :-)
A proposal is the Potsdam tour
"Berlin without Potsdam is like Paris without Versailles. A royal residence since the 17th Century, Potsdam boasts not only spectacular palaces, but a fascinating Cold War history as well!"
When visiting large European cities, I've started looking for "free walking tours" on the internet for the cities being visited.
The tour guides have always been fantastic, and they work for "tips."
And the same tour company usually has a Nightlife Tour or Pub Crawl Tour that we take the first night we're in any city. That's where you find all the great bars and places with nightlife. The tour will have 10-15 people from all over the world, and they're all there to have a good time.
The "free tours" that operate in many cities are known to be one of the worst employers around. (New Europe Tours aka Sandemans) They make their guides pay a 2.50-3.50 € fee for each person who begins their tour. They have had their computers and files confiscated in Munich and Berlin, have multiple court cases against them and aren't even allowed to operate in Italy. Most of their guides are newly arrived students or expats who know little of the city they are working in, except for having memorized a script. If you have gone on a tour with a reputable company with a professional guide and then gone one of the free tours, you will quickly see the difference. These are not tours I would recommend for a senior traveling alone in Berlin.
For group tours, Insider tours is excellent and the #1 rated tour, as is Original Walks. For a private guide with reasonable rates, check out Jeremy the Berlin Expert.

Hi rateshi,
I recommend the free tours of HostelCulture
They have 3 different tours: a general covering the main attractions, one that walks through the alternative spots in Berlin and the third one is covering the places of the WWII era.
I took the first one in August, the Free Tour of Berlin. Our guide was really energetic and informative and the tour covered basically everything from the TV tower to the Jewish Memorial.
