tour guide in Upper Middle Rhine Valley

I am traveling to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley in July with my two adult daughters. We will be staying at the Arenfels Castle. I’m so excited to explore the area. I see that there are river boats that offer 2-3 hour trips down the river. Is there any other way to see the cute towns and explore them? Maybe a tour guide? All suggestions very welcome.

Arenfels is a fair distance north of Koblenz, where the Upper MRV comes to an end, but you're close enough that you can easily visit the towns to the south of Koblenz by train. DB indicates a walk of roughly 15 minutes to the Bad Hoenningen station for the train ride to Koblenz. In Koblenz you have a choice of east- or west-bank railways to points south. See this detailed map of the UMRV with train lines, towns, ferry crossings, day cruise boat docks, etc.:

For cruising: use the train south to Rüdesheim or Bingen and cruise back north to St Goar - this takes about 1.5 hours and around €20, and covers the most scenic river segment. The rest of the valley is visible from the windows of your train car.

Linz, north of Arenfels, makes for a good visit; so does Remagen, across from Linz and accessible by ferry crossing.

Also at Koblenz you can travel up the Mosel and Lahn rivers. There are boats n the Mosel.
