Top picks for only two days in Munich, mid May.

We are staying in the Reim area and looking at adventure in Munich for only two days. What was your favorite, not to miss experience. Was you tour to Newshwanstein worth giving up a day in Munich?

Hi, Fitz, there are so many things to see in Munich with only two days, I wouldn't use one of those days to head to Neuschwanstein Castle. For one thing, it's not that historic, and it's going to take you at least four hours to get there and back. If you had more time there, I would say go for it, but with only two days, you could easily fill that time with Munich.

In terms of things to see in Munich, here is a list of Rick Steves' chosen picks. https://www.ricksteves.com/europe/germany/munich

Of these, I would definitely prioritize these places:

  • Marienplatz: Munich's main square, at the heart of a lively pedestrian zone, watched over by New Town Hall and its glockenspiel.
  • Viktualienmarkt: Munich's "small-town" open-air market, great for a quick snack or meal.
  • Hofbräuhaus: World-famous beer hall, worth a visit even if you're not chugging.
  • Residenz: Elegant family palace of the Wittelsbachs, awash in Bavarian opulence. Complex includes the Residenz Museum (private apartments), Residenz Treasury (housing Wittelsbach family crowns and royal knickknacks), and the impressive, heavily restored Cuvilliés Theater.
  • Alte Pinakothek: Bavaria's best painting gallery, with a wonderful collection of European masters from the 14th through the 19th century.

Another vote for the Residenz. We also liked the BMW museum if you are into cars and motorcycles.

I hesitate weighing in since I've not been to Munich yet, but am planning on being there in September. That being said, Alte Pinakothek and the Egyptian museum are on my agenda.

Agree with Mardee's post. I would add Rick's Walking Tour as a foundation for one day. Pick sites to enter or to just walk past.

Thank you all! Mardee’s point about staying in town makes a lot of sense. I don’t need another 8 hours of travel after a day of flying. Love all your suggestions but think I’ll add the white water kayakers.
