Time to Clear Customs in Frankfurt?

We will be arriving at FRA at 1100 on a Monday this August. We will be catching a train to Bamberg. Can anyone advise how much time we should allow for getting luggage and clearing customs? TIA

There isn't any customs in Frankfurt unless you have something that needs to be declared like 10,000 € or huge imports. There is just passport control and this is usually fast and efficient. The average amount of time it takes after a flight lands and walking out into the public side of the airport is 45 min. This includes picking up luggage.

Flights that land in Terminal 2, sometimes go a bit faster as there are only 2 gates in this terminal. Which airline are you using? If you do land in Terminal 2, you will have to go to Terminal 1 which is where both of the train stations are located.

They land in Terminal 2.

If you want to take the Regional train your best bet is to go with the monorail Skytrain over to Terminal 1. It runs every 2 min. or so. Once you get to Terminal 1, just follow the signs to the train station which is located under Arrivals B-1. Your train will leave from track 3.

If you are going with one of the IC or ICE trains, your best bet is to take the free shuttle bus that goes to the Long Distance train station located under the Squaire, which is sort of part of Terminal 1.

Frankfurt's T2 is pretty well organized. Arriving from London you first clear passport control (immigration to the Schengen zone). Once you're through you already are by the baggage reclaim belts. Then you decide if you leave that hall through the green "nothing to declare" or the red exit.

You are then in arrivals hall and you can see the main exit of the building. Do go out where the curb-side pick-up/drop off is. Just left of that main door is a bus stop where the yellow shuttle bus from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 will be. Get onto it because at Terminal 1 it will drop you off right be the elevator up to the long-distance train station. It's very convenient and I prefer it over the monorail where you will have to walk much longer distances all across the airport.

At the top end of the elevator to your right there is the Sheraton hotel with very clean bathrooms (in case you need one). Entrance is by the "Ditsch" hot bretzel stand. Alternatively just continue to get to the train platforms.

"We will be catching a train to Bamberg."
How are you doing this? With a German railpass? Pre-purchased Saver Fare? Normal tickets? Day pass for regional trains? Normal tickets will cost around €120 - €140 for two using the fast trains. The saver fare on the fast trains is cheap - but you must use it exactly as scheduled, and you risk ticket forfeiture if you don't make your train; flight delays are the biggest variable in determining whether you make it or not. Using regional trains with day passes could get the price down to around €45 for two and could be bought on the day of travel when you're ready - but they will lengthen the trip.
