Time to allocate to Schloss Hohenschwangau and Schloss Neuschwanstein

Planning to visit Bavaria in July 2017. How much time should I allocate to visit either/both Schloss Hohenschwangau and Schloss Neuschwanstein?

Kevin,

Are you planning to take the train from Munich to Füssen? I'd suggest allowing at least four hours for the two castles along with Mary's Bridge if that interests you. You'll have to allow time to walk up to the castles, wait in line for your timed entry, walk to the other castle and then return to the Bus stop for the ride back to the station.

How much time when you are actually at the castles in Hohenschwangau? Or, at the ticket kiosk, or from Füssen, or Munich

I think normally, when you buy a ticket for both castles at the ticket kiosk, the entrance to Neuschwanstein is first, in an hour. The tour takes 30 min. It takes about 30 min to get back down to Hohenschwangau, then 35 min for the tour of Hohenschwangau. So to be safe, figure 3 hours from the time you buy the ticket at the kiosk to visit both castles.

For the roundtrip bus to and from Füssen Bahnhof, plus waiting for the bus, figure about another hour (four hours total). For the train to/from Munich, add another 4 hours.

Those times assume that you have reserved tickets in advance.

I've also found we were done with our visit within 4 hours. There is usually about an hour wait after purchasing the tickets, then I left about an hour between the two castle tours to allow for enough time to walk up to Neuschwanstein after touring Hohenschwangau.

Since you are coming by car, if you have time (and the inclination) take a short stroll around part of the Alpsee, the lake at the end of the road between the two castles. It is very pretty. Here is a view from Neuschwanstein over to Hohenschwangau with the Alpsee on the left.

Oh I am glad you liked that suggestion! I did Rick's Germany/Austria/Switzerland tour this year which has a stop at Neuschwanstein. I had been thru both castles a couple of years ago on the 21 Day Best of Europe and didn't really want to go back to either castle but I DID want to walk around the lake. I went to the left and it has a very nice wide path for as far as I walked. I ~think~ there was a sign that said it takes about 1.5 hours to walk around it. I did not do the whole thing but I enjoyed what I did do.
