Time in Bavaria - opinions on schedule

Hi Folks,

As I already posted on another thread, I'm planning on Interrailing around Germany this summer for 9 days, followed by 4 days at the community of Taize, in France, from the 17th to the 30th of July. The start of my vacation is pretty much set, I'll be staying in Hamburg from the 17th to the 20th, taking in Lubeck as well. On the 20th, I'll be catching the night train south:

Friday 21st - Arrive in Innsbruck, take Mittenwaldbahn train (fairly scenic I believe) to Garmisch Partenkirchen. See the town and stay overnight.
Saturday 22nd - Train north to Nuremburg. See the old town and maybe the Rally grounds. Train south to Munich to book into hostel
Sunday 23rd - Landsberg am Lech in the morning, Andechs Monastery afternoon/evening.
Monday 24th - Train to Berchtesgaden, see Kehlsteinhaus, Konigsee boat trip/Obersee hike, Luge etc. Stay overnight
Tuesday 25th - Do/see anything I didn't get to day before, maybe afternoon in Salzburg if I've seen everything I want to by midday. Night train from Salzburg to Zurich to continue next day to Taize.

OK, so how does this sound? I'm aware that I'm possibly not giving GP enough time, although I'm not going to go up the Zugspitze. Even so, is it worth visiting for the one day, or should I give it more time to take it in and perhaps Oberammergau? I could confine Berchtesgaden to one day and not do as much, but then as I'm travelling from Munich, would it be enough to do that justice? Or should I forget Lubeck and use that day?

How about Landsberg am Lech - I'm told it's very nice, but won't it be mainly shut down as it's a Sunday, or is it like Rothenburg, considered touristy enough for shops to open? Otherwise, is there anything better to do on a Sunday in the region? I hear Andechs is busy on a weekend - but at least it's open!

I saw Munich, N'stein and Rothenburg ODT along with Berlin, Heidelberg and the Rhine 2 years ago if anyone is wondering why these aren't featuring. Thanks!

we managed to fit Kehlsteinhaus and the Konigsee boat trip in the same day, but we had a car and were already staying at Berchtesgaden. have you considered going to the document centre as well? keep an eye out on the weather for the eagle nest tour.
so to do the area justice you may need more time in the Berchtesgaden/salzburg area. walking around berchtesgaden town, while only small, is very similar to oberammergau.( without all the wood carving)
we went up the zugspitze and while it was very good, not a 'real stand' out compared to other mountain train/cable car rides, in other nearby countries, once again weather dependent.

hope this helps

Yes I hear it can be done, and certainly from Salzburg. Add 2 and a half hours from Munich though and you're halfway through the morning by the time you get there! It's a pity these attractions don't open later, as on the Tuesday, the night train doesn't arrive in Salzburg until after midnight (I did the same journey 2 years ago), but at least I can spend some time there in the evening looking around the town. I'm not planning to do the documentation centre. I'm sure it's fascinating, but it's not high up on my list - maybe if it's hurling down with rain!!

Yes, I went to the Bernese Oberland last year, and both hiked up the Schilthorn and visited the Jungfraujoch, so the Zugspitze would probably not measure up! Other than the mountain, did you like Garmisch, or was it a brief visit?

Thanks!

The train from Innsbruck to Garmisch-Partenkirchen (I didn't know it was called the MIttlenwaldbahn) via Seefeld is indeed scenic (unless you are from Colorado).

I believe the trip from Landsberg to Berchtesgaden, and then seeing Kehlsteinhaus and Königsee on the same day, is a bit of a stretch.

I was in Landsberg on a Sunday, and I didn't really notice a difference. Buses might not be running on as full a schedule but the trains schedule should not be much different.

Thanks Lee,
I'm not planning to stay the night in Landsberg am Lech, just a morning trip there. Will be staying in Munich on nights of 22nd/23rd, and right next to the bahnhof. Still a long trip though, and unless I can drag myself out of bed at about 7 maybe, it'd be a rushed trip in a day.

No not from Colorado alas, but the east midlands of England - Not very alpine! The Mittenwaldbahn used to be called the Karwendelbahn I believe - but that's the name of a cable car run in the region now.

No, everything but restaurants will be closed. But Landsberg isn't a shopping town anyway.

I'm not planning to do any serious shopping in Landsberg (maybe a stocknagel for my collection!), I'm just a little worried that it might be a little dead on a Sunday, although Lee seems to have found it ok. I sometimes wish that the UK still had a similar stance to Sunday trading though, especially as I'm in retail!

Anyone willing to stand up for Garmisch Partenkirchen? Looks like I'll be staying for a night in Berchtesgaden as above, so that means only the one afternoon in GaPa, as the Mittenwald-line train doesn't get there until 11.57, and I'll probably take an evening train to Munich the same day as it'll be an Interrail travel day. So all it amounts to is a scenic train ride in the morning, then having a good look around the two parts of the town, taking in the atmosphere and enjoying the alpine setting. Is it worth it?

Well I've just sat through about 20 minutes of it, sampling the journey in different places. Once I get excited about my travels I can quite easily watch those train driver view videos, though perhaps not an hour and a half! Last year it was the Lotschberger line running through Switzerland, year before it was night train videos!

I'm resigned now to the fact that the day will just be a nice taster of the mountains and GP. Spent pretty much all my holiday last year in the mountains, so it's no biggie!
