Time Allocation for Herrenchiemsee compared to Nyphemburg

Hi gang!

I'm leaving in about 3 weeks for what's become something of an annual trek to Munich's opera festival.
Looking to do some things I have not had a chance to do previously such as some of the palaces.

How long should I allocate for a trip to/from Herrenchiemsee from the city?
Second, trying to decide between Nymphenburg and Schleissheim palaces. Pros/cons?

I'm thinking of spending a few days in Dresden as well. My first time there. How much time at a minimum would you suggest for the Albertinum, the Green Vaults, and the military museum? The latter sounds like I could spend all day there! Not too keen on old churches, but do want to see the Frauenkirche.

Thanks!

I could easily spend a week in and around Chiemsee. Nymphenberg is actually a series of guest houses built around a garden. It's a nice afternoon, or leisurely day.

Nymphenburg is a whole lot easier (and quicker) to get to than Herrenchiemsee. Just take the tram 23 minutes from the Munich Hbf to the street that goes in front of the palace, then it's a 7 minute walk to the front of the palace.

The trip to Herrenchiemsee requires a nearly one hour train ride, then a 22 minute walk to the harbor. You can also ride to the harbor on a steam streetcar. Then it's a 20 minute boat ride to the island and a 15 minute, 1.2 km walk to the palace itself. You can also rent a horse cart to take you to the palace.

I went to Chiemsee in April and the boat ride to the Island was very nice. The tour of the Castle was about an hour and not rushed with good narration and the Grunds surrounding the Castle are very nice,we spent about 3 Hours there and enjoyed our visit. In Dresden I Took my time at the Museums and the Green Vault is one of the best that I have Seen. Not mentioned in your post is Moritzburg Hunting Lodge in Dresden,it is surrounded by a Moat and well worth a visit.I went to the Green Vault when it opened in 2006 and it was very busy with times entry so we spent about 3 hours there due to the crowds.

We spent a terrific day combining the Nymphenburg Palace and the Munich Botanical Garden. The gardens are adjacent and we entered from the palace grounds as I recall. We made a short stop at the Garden’s restaurant and visited the gardens.

We just got back from Munich and visited Schleissheim Palace while were there. We only had time to do the New Palace and the Gardens, everything else closed by the time we were done. That said, we started about 3 in the afternoon. It is a lovely place. We had it almost to ourselves. Which for us was great! The art there was really great.

As for Nymphenburg, I visited there in High School and the only things I remember about it was the sleds and the hunting lodge b/c it was pink.

We stayed at a really lovely hotel near Schleissheim Palace called Hotel am Schlosspark Zum Kurfürst. It was a perfect spot. 15 mins from Dachau, 30 mins from the English Garden and we did a park and ride from the train station to go to downtown Munich. I think the hotel website said they had a shuttle to the train station.

I'd devote at least an entire day to the Albertinum, Green Vaults, and Military Museums, if not a day and a half to get the most out of all three.

Yesterday, we ended up going to Nymphenburg based on the advise of the desk clerk at our hotel, although we had actually initially planned on going to Herrenchiemsee, due to the travel time factor between the two. We had a great day. Loved the various sections of Nymphenburg, especially the carriage and sled building and the indoor pool house. Had a lovely lunch at the restaurant in the gardens, and took time to relax by the lake in the gardens since we did not have a long return trip. The trams from the HBf are 16 and 17 to the Schloss.
