There are two flights I’m looking at but both are tight connections. I would be flying from Italy in March to Germany, then on to the US. One flight flies into Munich and has a one hour layover. The other flies into Frankfurt and has an hour and 15 minute layover. I would check my bag through to US. I wouldn’t have to go through security would I? I would be transferring from an Italian airline to United. Am I dreaming to think I could make either connection?
I certainly wouldn't do it. Hopefully you can find other flights, all on the same ticket, with at least two hours between them. Good luck!
That would give me nightmares for days before the flight. They would be boarding your US bound flight before you even got off the first one. Those are legal connections for both airports, but the slightest delay in arrival time or a backup at Passport Control would put you at very high risk of missing the flight. Our last experience at Frankfurt had a connection time of 90 minutes. Until we had a delay leaving Florence and headwinds once in the air. We ended up with less than an hour, and would have missed the second flight if we hadn't been first off the plane (business class) and had use of a priority lane for immigration. Boarding was just finishing when we got to the gate. Try to see if you can get better flight times.
We did a 1 hr connection in Frankfurt and barely made it on our flight. Our bags definitely didn't.
While you don't have to go through security, you do have to go through exit immigration.
A few months ago in Berlin, on a Wednesday at Noon, it took just over 30 minutes to get through exit passport control. They only had one booth open and the officer on dutry was carefully checking every passport.
I wouldn't try either of your connections.
We did Munich with a 55 minute layover. Of course, your arrival in Munich needs to be on time or quite close to that.
Munich was SO MUCH BETTER than FRA, CDG and LHR. (Frankfurt, Paris and London/Heathrow)
Munich is designed for short connections. You will go through exit immigration, but not security. Is your flight back to the States operated by United or Lufthansa? If United it should depart from terminal 2; if Lufthansa it would most likely depart from T2 Satellite, which is connected to T2 by an underground train.
Is the flight from Italy on ITA or someone else? Most likely it will arrive at Terminal 1 - from there you would take a bus [which appears to be airside] to T2. For an United flight, that's the departing terminal. If Lufthansa you would then get on the train to the satellite.

I would look up the flights on FlightAware or one of the other flight tracking sites to get an idea of on-time performance and hopefully gate numbers.
I recently made connections in Munich of 75 and 90 minutes between T2 and the T2 Satellite with time to spare.
You don't say if it is booked as one ticket or not.
I'd take a chance on Munich. Frankfurt no way.
I’d attempt the 1 hour connection in Munich.
I had a 1h25 connection in Munich in October (Bologna - Munich - Washington Dulles) which I made with time to spare. You will go through passport control; there are automated gates and that went quickly for me. I did encounter a security check upon entry into the gate area where various United flights were departing and passengers were diverted for secondary inspection. I wouldn’t worry about this causing you to miss your flight.
I often choose short connections as I hate waiting for hours in airports. Are there later flights on United or Lufthansa to the U.S. after your scheduled flight? If you got stuck overnight would you prefer to be in Frankfurt or Munich? These are some of the questions I ask when deciding whether to take a short connection.
p.s. I had a checked bag and my bag also made the connection.
Thanks for all the helpful replies.
I decided if I had to spend an extra night, I would spend it in Paris! So going for a few days and will fly out of CDG on a nonstop. LOL
(My husband’s favorite quote is, “Paris is always a good idea.”
Or as Henri IV said, "Paris is worth a mass."
At some airports for domestic transfers, one hour might work just fine. We have done so in Atlanta and JAX airports.
Still, when you see flights for sale by airlines for great prices, then you see only 54 minutes to connect in an airport like CDG or AMS, forget it, that is not enough.
