Yes, nice places on the whole, good options. Very nice to see Monschau getting a thumbs-up. I've never been to Görlitz. I'm very surprised to see Heidelberg at #4; I doubt it woulda snuck into my own top 15. Same for Trier - not especially "romantic" though it ranks high on other grounds IMO. Rothenburg... Yes indeed if you happen to catch it when the crowds aren't there, but I don't get the rationale that it's romantic on account of its presence in films from Hollywood, or because of Käthe Wohlfahrt!!

Has 5 of my favorite cities in Germany. Bamberg is a Franconian gem often overlooked and overpowered by Nuremberg to its south. If you want to see a classic Bavarian city that boasts a homey and manageable Christmas market, as well as a lot of excellent breweries, don’t miss it!

I have been to Meissen and Bautzen a nice walled city famous for mustard, but I have not been to Görlitz yet. Görlitz is on the border with Poland. These three cities are within 120k of each other in the old east and not far from Dresden (Meissen is 30k from Dresden). They look to be connected with an S-Bahn (I drove). This could make a nice three to four day trip and a little off the US tourist beaten path.

Very Interesting article! Thanks for posting it. We've been to most of these. When I saw the article I was hoping Bad Wimpfen would have made the list as it's on our itinerary this summer. wondering if it's considered a village vs. a town. The article really makes me want to visit some of these towns that we haven't been to yet, but they are too out of the way for our upcoming trip. Just have to plan another trip:)

Totally disagree with Lubitsch about Cochem! We spent 3 nights there in 2012 and we're spending 2 nights there this summer. It IS somewhat touristy, but we loved it's charm!

I like the list! We've been to more than half of them, favorites are the Harz Mountain cities of Quedlinburg and Goslar. Görlitz is also on my short list!

I've been nattering on about Goerlitz and Quedlinburg since I saw them in 2015 and would happily return to both. But there are so many charming towns in Germany that I haven't seen, including many on that list.

I won't comment on the above recommended towns simply as I have not seen them for myself....as yet, (some are on the bucket list) such as Goslar, Görlitz, Bamberg, etc.

These are the towns I've visited, from once or repeatedly, which fit the description: I recommend...Meissen, Marburg an der Lahn,

Lüneburg, Minden, Eutin/Hostein, Weimar, and Potsdam

During our trip this past Autumn we spent a week in Dresden and four days in Gorlitz .
for architecture buffs , it's terrific . Every style from Medieval through Art Nouveau , and virtually all of it in splendid condition .

I visited Bad Wimpfen in 1999. Outside of the local area I don't think it was a great tourist draw then. I took my parents there and they really liked it. Probably worth another visit next time I'm in that area. I always enjoy a visit to Heidelberg and the Neckar river valley.
