We liked Kempten. Had a car, visited Ottobeuren Abbey first. If you do the same, at some point on the country road leading into Ottobeuren you can take a great wide shot of the abbey.

In Kempten we parked across the river for free in a large park, which we walked around. Walked by the archaeological park but did not go inside the main building.

The old town is fairly compact, clean, busy in a pleasant way. Visited a couple of churches. A nice square near the town hall, a good spot to eat outside.

Historically, Kempten consists of two cities: the free imperial city, which has been Protestant since the 16th century, and the catholic prince-provostry, a sovereign ecclesiastical territory till 1806. This contrast is still evident today in interesting architectural contrasts in the inner city. The old town, located anlongside the river, is dominated by Gothic architecture (the protestant parish church, the town hall), while the upper town features the pompous Baroque style of the catholic collegiate church and the associated residence.

Kempten also has a Roman past, which can be explored in an extensive excavation area of the Roman Cambodunum.

For lunch or dinner, the "Fasshalle" beer hall (with beer garden) is located about 100 meters across from the collegiate church.
