My wife and I are hoping to take a one-week trip in early July of this year to Germany/Austria and would like to concentrate our visit in southern Bavaria and the Austrian Alps. My question is: How will this being a year that the Oberammergau Passion Play is going on effect our ability to find housing in this region and will places like Neuschwanstein and other popular sites be overly crowded because of this year's interest in the Play? We are not planning on attending the Play, but am curious what impact it will have on the region for other travel. Thanks.

Outside of the immediate area around O'gau, the effect should be minimal.
We are staying in Garmisch-Partenkirchen for a week in mid July and had the same question. Then I realized that play or not, I can reasonably expect things to be crowded in tourist destinations during summer anyway.......
Yesterday I booked an Airbnb in Kohlgrub for mid-September. It is 12km from Oberammergau. The price did not appear to be inflated.
Thanks for your responses. We just didn't know. I know the Passion Play is a big deal and draws a lot people when it is going on. So, Germany here we come!
